Yea, it`s another one of those recommend me a telly threads...

Morning all... I`ve come into a wee bit of money, and rather than do something sensible with it, I`ve decided to go out and blow it all on a telly.

Currently, I`m a flat screen virgin. Half of my living room is taken up by a big 37" CRT and it`s stand... I know nothing about 1080p and all that stuff, so sort of relying on you guys...

PS3 needs to look good on it, and so does Dating In the Dark (for the missus)...

Currently looking around the £500 mark, may be able to stretch it a bit though.

Oh... I may also be in the market for a new PC too, depending on how much money is left over.......

If you`re used to a 37" CRT, I would recommend a 40" LCD.
Even with the bigger screen, it will take up much less room.
For £500(ish), I would recommend.

Samsung LE40C530 or LE40C650
Sony KDL-40EX401 or KDL-40EX503.

If you`re going for a PS3, might make more sense to get a Sony LCD too.
Means you can use the one remote for viewing DVDs etc.

Go to richardsounds.com, sign up to the Buyers Club email.
Wait for the email to hit your inbox, look at the ridiculously large and lower than normal priced tellys.
Go to your local Richer sounds and ask for a demo of the preferred unit.
Go home n happily spend the next 3 weeks shouting at the missus about how to set it up ;)

Prerequisites (as yer using PS3) : Decent HDMI cable (thatcable.com for good cheap cable) and 1080p.
You can go for any screen res you like, but as the PS3 can do full 1080p and soon to do 3D you may as well get the better whilst you can (RS are doing a fair few 1080p units for under £500, think the last mail had a Sammy or an LG 50" for £500 that was 1080p)

As to the LCD/Plasma argument I`m not gonna go there again, enough threads on that already just go into the store and ask for the same demo on each preferred unit, and ask the guys for advice... they`re generally pretty decent.

And I personally wouldn`t touch a Sony telly. The one and only thing they have going in their favour at the moment to me is their ability to link with Sony 3D BD players and the PS3 on 3D.
Then again, 3D is well over £500 so it kinda takes that outta the equation.

If I was going for a new unit, top of my list would be Panasonic, closely followed by Samsung, possibly LG and onwards from there.

I wouldn`t touch Sony again either, to be honest.
Dunno why I recommended them.
I`d happily have another Samsung or LG though, no problems with them at all.

What they advertise and what they have in store are two different things

Best to ring before hand

I`ve yet to find a RS that sends out a Buyers Club email that doesn`t have any stock.
It is still good advice to ring first but in general they have stock to cover themselves.

Oh, and if you or a friend have a Costco card it`s worth a butcher`s in there too, 5 year guarantee included in the price.

John Lewis are doing a 40" Toshiba for £499, with 5-year guarantee.
My first `big` LCD was a Toshiba.
Still going strong, I gave it to my mother when I upgraded.

They`re also doing a load of big plasmas for under £500.
But I wouldn`t touch plasma with a 40` pole, so can`t be bothered posting links.

And away we go!

I have a Samsung and an LG, both 37" LCD and am happy with both of them.
The difference you`ll see on the PS3 is amazing.
