I`ve checked in my What Hifi magazine and it doesn`t appear to play CDR`s. The only players that do are made by Phillips, Pioneer, Hitachi and Wharfedale.

As for Audio CDR`s, it won`t make any difference. They are just repackaged branded CDR`s with a higher price tag.

No firmware or software update would help because it is the laser focus depth that decides whether a player can play CDR`s and this particular Sony player doesn`t support them.

Sorry, but not all that many DVD players play CDR`s.

I cannot speak for your make and model of player but I find this very strange if it is supposed to play audio CD`s
My budget DVD player supports DA and MP3 on CD-R & CD-RW.
All of my CD players (Some very cheap and nasty, too.) can play CD-DA on CD-R. They don`t mention it in the specification of course.

I would have thought that a DVD drive supporting CD-DA would also work.
I understood that burned CDR-DA is almost identical to CD-DA.
I do agree that the construction of the media is different, CDR tend to be thicker, but most drives have a reasonable degree of tolerance.

Does the player play normal CD-DA discs (remember those, the ones people used to buy before MP3 came along ;-)) ?
Do the CD-R discs work in a normal CD audio player ?
I use Adaptec EASY CD to create DA discs (It was supplied free with the HP CD Re-Writer).

The media can make a difference, but I have used many different brand`s without any problems. I even use cheap (50p each) 700MB 80Mins CDR (Memorex) which I thought would be fussy, and they work fine !!

Have you tried Sony UK support to confirm one way or another ?
They must have a web site !
