Help on Choosing a DVD Player for my P.C

richieiselvis (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 28th January 2002, 10:39

Hello Everyone

I have had a DVD standalone player for about a year now and want to add one to my pc. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to a cheap player that was also multi region.

Thanks in advance

Richie

I think the best PC DVD player out at the moment is the pioneer DVD 116 which you can get i think from scan.co.uk for about £50 ish. I certainly know that at the time i bought it it was one of the best DVD players you could get for the PC.
As far as multiregioning it i know there is a web site which you can download some software which UNLOCKS that DVD player which then means you can use DVD genie to select which region you want to play. This can be changed as many times as you wish although do not try and use dvd genie before you have unlocked your DVD player. Both pieces of software can be downloaded for free off the internet the only problem is finding the web site. I am pretty sure that unless it has been deleted there is a thread somewhere in here which mentions this particular web site (It is a fairly old thread mind you)
Hope this has been of some help.

I have just ordered a Lite-on from Dabs, which according to the site below (as referred to in the above post) has firmware "updates" to allow multiregion use. I`ll let you know how I get on - new one for me, too!

Well, my Lite-on arrived, and having used cdvdinfo to check which version of the firmware it had on it (GH5E), I downloaded the appropriate firmware util to turn the drive to RPC1 (i.e. region free). Worked a treat. Installed DVDGenie to select a region, and away we go!

If you`re interested, the item I ordered was the Lite-on OEM DVD drive, quicklink code 12VTWS, at £43 plus VAT.
