How can i get any kind of dolby with this set-up?

Gillsfan (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 25th January 2002, 14:05

I have a Dolby 5.1 compatible DVD player without built in decoder, i have a 32"wide dolby pro logic tv.
The problem is that the TV`s amp is crap. The speakers that came with the TV are even worse.
I am going to replace the speakers with a cheap amp and speaker set which didnt have a 5.1 decoder in it and wasnt quite sure how i would even get pro logic through these speakers.
Do i connect through the TV?, or through the DVD player.
I just want reasonable quality pro logic or 5.1 at a very cheap price. Can anyone help?

You can pick up a pioneer vsx c300 amp from techtronics for 160.00, I`ve got one and it`s great. you can get speakers form www.qed-uk,com, yamaha package for 130.00 ish.
This should be a good start, it will give you DTS as well!

To be honest, although that sounds like an excellent idea, i only wanted to pick up a speaker set.
I plan to get a better set-up soon but for now ive seen a set of speakers which have a sub with an amp built in, but no decoder. Its £140.
I was wondering if i could connect the amp and speakers to my TV some how to improve the current pro logic set.
Other wise if by connecting the speaker set to the DVD player im only going to get 2-channel sound then i will save up for the Amp suggested to me.
Thanks

Bruce

Gillsfan, if you use the anlogue outputs from your TV and DVD player they will pass Dolby Pro logic information to your amp. As long as the amp is pro logic compatible it will produce DPL surround.

However my suggestion would be to wait and save up for an amp with DD5.1 decoder (if your DVD will send DTS get an amp with a DTS encoder as well). THen you connect your DVD via the digital output (optical or coax) to the amp and the TV via Phonos.

This will make the DVD sound 1000% better.

If you go for the amp with no decoder you will upgrade sooner or later anyway so best to get it first time round.
