How do I connect a DVD player to a scartless TV?

LebusTala (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 13th January 2002, 16:10

My TV is fairly old, but it`s a large screen and I`m happy with it (and can`t afford a new one just now). I was given a DVD player for xmas but since the only input I have to the TV is via an ariel connection, all my other connections go via the video ( I have a digibox which runs thru the video) and then the video leads to the TV, right?

Okay, now when I tried to connect the DVD player via a scart socket between the player and my video, the picture keeps dropping and such.

I know there is a security feature on DVDs that make them uncopyable, and I don`t want to copy the discs (why would I when I already have the film on better format?) but is there some sort of overide? Is there a scart lead or connection that will cost me a lot less than having to buy a new TV with a scart connection?

Please help, I`m desperate to watch my Stargate Special Edition!!

Lebus, DVDs have a thing called Macrovision that stops you videoing them. This sounds like your problem.

Do you have any inputs under the front flap on the TV? If so a scart to composite or S-Video lead may work.

Is there someway of using the STB like you use the video??

Otherwise you are sh%gged.

Plenty of second hand TVs in the rental shops with scart cables. Or just rent one whilst you save up.

Lektropacks.co.uk do sell a RF Modulator which allows you to connect your DVD player to the aerial socket of your TV set. However, it costs £50, money that would be better put towards a new TV IMO.

I have found that I can watch a DVD connected through a VCR but the macrovision only comes on when I set my video to record.

What make and model is the DVD player/VCR? You may be able to remove macrovision with a hack?

Take any other boxes out of the connection and just connect the DVD to the VCR with the scart lead and the VCR to the TV. Do you still get problems?

If still no good you can get a macrovision removal cable for about £30 (search these forums)

OR

Sell your DVD player and get a Dansai (macro free for under £100 at Tesco)

My video is a Phillips 676, the DVD is Oritron 1030, and I`ve already used the hack on this site to make it multi-region. The TV doesn`t have any other connectors, only the ariel.

Why not just get an aerial splitter from Maplins or somebody for a couple of quid and plug into the TV aerial input ?
