Indoor Aerial For Freeview

Mister Smee (Elite) posted this on Monday, 8th September 2008, 13:51

I`ve got a problem with my external aerial ie it`s not working.

Now, I have Sky+ so don`t normally use it. However I`d like to pick up Freeview a) just for the hell of it and b) to get firmware updates for my Samsung telly.

Before I get someone in who`ll no doubt charge me an arm and a leg to sort out the aerial
I thought I`d try and see what Freeview reception will be like. So my plan is to get some kind of indoor aerial and see how it works. Anyone got any suggestions?

I`ve tried an old old very old indoor one and got absolutely nothing on digital or analogue so am I doomed to failure?

I picked up a internal\external Freeview aerial kit from e-bay the other week £40, but have yet to put it up at my dad`s house (due to lots of precipitation).

Will let you know how it goes.

Wednesday.

I have a bathroom & my own house to work on, thus spake THO.

e-bay item 200248086840, it was a tough call between that or the higher gain, heavier kit mounting.

Lots of houses have similar or larger sized aerials pointing at Stockland Hill about 20 miles away, but very few Freeview aerials are pointing at "Whitestone" near Chris Martins dad`s house 3 miles away, this may well change when analogue gets switched off (although it`s technically Digital ready, St Thomas is in a "dip" or too close to the transmitter & may need a aerial amp according to other people in the pub).

Our outdoor aerial is great but I get f*** all with an indoor aerial - anyone know an average price for having my bedroom connected to the aerial on the roof?

For everyone`s information, this site has more than you could possibly imagine on aerials and associated topics: ATV

i recently fitted an outdoor digital aerial in the loft so that my daughter could
use the freeview/hdd thomson thingymajig we bought her.

didn`t fancy climbing up ladders `cos i don`t get on too well with heights, so chose
the easy way out and attached it to one of the diagonal roof supports in the loft
instead.

turned out to be a bit of a `mare as i had to be able to receive channel 5 in order
for the top-up stuff to work. initially, i was only getting 4 frequencies and around 30
channels, i tweaked it (ooer) a degree or two then got around 70 channels.

not wanting the bastard to defeat me, i braved the loft again and managed to get 6
frequencies and 90+ channels.

i had bought (and took back) one of those "all in one" brand indoor digital aerials
from argos...it cost £30 and tbh was a bit s***. it also required power from the mains.

Ste.

Just out of interest, has anyone tried a set top aerial (not that an LCD tv has a top to put it on...)?

EDIT: FYI I`ve spoken to an aerial installer and a whole new aerial and cable installed would be £125+VAT plus an extra £25 if a new bracket and pole is needed.

The aerial is up after 4 hours of running around:

Problem 1 - U bolts purchased by aged father are wrong size, nip off & swap them.

Problem 2 - Supplied "attic pole" doesnt give enough clearance over the ridge of next doors roof, when fitted to the existing aerial mountings.

Problem 3 - No signal on FV box, check all is well on using analogue channels, realign aerial a bit, restart channel search while son adjusts the aerial until we start detecting channels. Tighten up & check signal strength.

Repeat aerial adjustment using one channel only max signal strength 25%, most likely due to aerial not clearing the roof ridge, but the vast majority if not all channels are now up & running in the clear (adverse weather conditions not yet tested). 12M cable run just long enough to reach his TV, old UHF interconnect cable utilised to give a bit of leeway.

Happy (as long as he can get to grips with the remote) aged father buying me a couple of pints tonight, especially in the light of a "chancer" cold calling on his door offering to sort him out for £165.
