Ready to buy the Scan, but which one do i get.

isotonic (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 6th November 2000, 15:48

I`ve been reading the forums for a while now and have read about the new scan with its updated mpeg card.. its release date was late october. So I visited the scan site and noticed that they`ve discounted the player.. is this because they`re trying to get rid of the older version???? So if i was to order one today, which version would i get???

Any help is appreciated.

I don`t think the price has been discounted - I ordered one today and it is still £186 with the next day shipping charge.

I rang Scan this afternoon to see if they were selling the latest playes. The lady that answered said that the recent batch of new ones had sold out and that more would be arriving on Wednesday. I said I`d ring later in the week.

I then had second thoughts and decided that I might as well place an order anyway, so rang Scan again. This time I spoke to a guy who said that the players *were* in stock and so I ordered one for delivery tomorrow. Doesn`t exactly build confidence when you get that kind of experience...

I`ll let you know when/if the player arrives and how it performs.

No disrespect to Scan or their product but are you sure ordering the one you did was wise. I reckon you`ll get one of the earlier models myself ?

Please let me be proved wrong...

No Clayts,

I rang Scan around the 25th Oct. and they didn`t have any SC2000`s of any sort in stock, they told me that they were waiting for the new ones which apparantly arrived about 31st Oct.

I`ll check my player carefully when it arrives anyway. As you may know new laws have recently come into force re. phone/internet/mail order giving a 7 day `cooling off` period. That`s one reason why I waited until after 31st Oct. before placing an order. I`ll just return it if I`m not happy.

The new batch is now avialable with the new mpeg card. The old ones
have sold out. Please note macro cannot be disabled.I am trying
to get the factory to provide a firmware to overcome this but they
are reluctant to hand it over.If it does come avialable it can be upgraded
by cd.

Isotonic - I think that Nelley has answered your query. If Macrovision cannot be disabled then it is a new version player - that is how you verify which version you have.

I am not bothered about Macro disable. I can build a small circuit to put in the lead which will remove the Macrovision components of the signal.
