Help needed with progressive scan :)

oreo (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 3rd January 2002, 22:36

am thinking about buying a new dvd player either a Denon 2800 or the arcam DV 88( upgraded to progressive scan ). The television it will be used on is a Toshiba 36ZP18P, this has component inputs, therefore i will in theory be able to utilise progressive scan dvds.

My problem is this ( bearing in mind i live in the UK (region 2)) i need to know wether progressive scan is only available on region 1 discs.

Thank you in advance to anyone spending their time in helping me :)

Component inputs does not mean that a tv will support progressive. Check the manual to see if it does.

Progressive PAL does not exist yet (so most UK tvs don`t support progressive video).

Progressive can only be used with NTSC dvds (region 1) at the moment.

I was under the impression that its not really a case of the TV supporting it or not. Progressive scan is just de-interlacing the video feed. Its more a case of wether it can accept it, and through the Component it can.

Progressive scan does exsist in pal as Arcam has released the FMJ DV27 however it is not legal yet. Dont quote me but i think it has something to do with macrovision.

So to answer my own question: in their present sate the DVD players would only output progressive scan if region 1 software was used. However with readily availble firmware upgrades, it will be possible to use region 2 software.

As it stands at the moment Prog scan can not be used on R2 PAL discs. Allthough the Arcam FMJ DV27 has the abillity to output prog scan in PAL at a later date it is not enabled yet. This is due to the buggers at macrovision. Saying that you can get prog scan on R2 PAL discs for your projector or plasma through component in via the I-Scan pro box (£750). Will this work with the tosh? I don`t know. Sorry.

All the best,

Andrew.
