DTS, how important is it?

d2k (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 27th December 2001, 19:36

I`m looking to buy a DVD Cinema Combo Package, I`ve seen what I think is a bit of a bargain but it has no support for DTS, only Dolby Digital and Prologic.

Would not having DTS be a problem? Are there films you can`t get in Dolby?

Thanks

Hi there,

Don`t panic! Whilst indeed dts can be a real riot, Dolby Digital has been embraced as THE industry standard for dvd audio playback, dts is what you could call the `luxury` option. Every dvd is compatible with all home cinema systems/kits/tv`s so that you don`y have to worry about. Dts movies have had a few dts only releases in the US-namely Private Ryan and Galaxy Quest to name two, but this is becoming rare as compression techniques become slicker. If you can stretch i`d advise you find a system with dts support as its nice to have all round compatibility, and please do have a demo of the kit you`re buying to judge whether its the bargain it really looks!

Hope this helps matey

Tell us what you`ve seen - there`ll be someone out there with that kit, who`ll be able to let you know what it`s really like (or even suggest an even better bargain, maybe!)

Comet are selling the Panasonic SCHT 70 for £299 at the moment, I`ve looked around and it`s £499 + most other places...

My other option is the Sony DAV S500, but the cheapest I`ve seen that is £480... another £180, although from what I can tell it`s the biz...

Looks a good price, but have you found out if you can hack it to multiregion? If it`s something that requires a hardware mod, you can add £50 or so to the price if you want multiregion....
In another post, alison mentions that the reviews of this have been mixed, but this may be on an audiophile basis - plus presumeably at the original price!
