LCD TV`s...Did you get 1 yr guarantee or 5?
The 37" Toshiba that i want is £649 at Play.com with 1 yr manufacturers guarantee.
But it is £899 at John Lewis with 5 yrs guarantee.
What did you guys do when you bought your tv`s?
Is it too much of a risk having no warranty after the 1 yr has passed?

I bought the Aldi 32" LCD TV 2 years ago with a 3 year guarantee. It`s still better than any big box tv I`ve seen.

In hind-sight, I could have purchased my TV from John Lewis aswell, but went to a cheaper firm, regret not going for the 5 year deal now, so I would go with John Lewis if I were you for peace of mind

Richer sounds do a panel protection that works out at about £10 per hundred spent, which isnt bad value so i went for 5 years. After 4 years, or when its obsolete, im going to wrap it in a duvet and leave it on in an airing cupboards overnight....

I really want that 5 yrs, but want to get the tv for bargain also.
I`ve had a matsui crt for around ten years now and it`s never missed a beat.
How reliable are large screen lcd`s these days?

I paid a bit more for a TV from Lewis`. You get the 5 years guarantee plus I prefer using a high street retailer for large purchases.
Cheers

I would just complain to the manufacturer and if that didn`t work then I would use the electrical goods rule that it needs to be fit for it`s purpose for a reasonable amount of time ie 6 years, I would seek help from trading standards too. Never bother with warranties, when ya got TS on your side. :D
Is that the time? Damn you Xbox 360!!!!

Richer Sounds cost price + 10% for the 5 year cover = Result!!!
OK so it was analogue set - But I run Sky so that was not worth paying the extra for & apparently living within miles of the local transmitter, we are in it`s blind spot. >:(
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

I bought my Toshiba 32WLT68 with a standard one year guarantee.
I will possibly shop around for an extended guarantee near the end of the first year.
Toshiba have already offered me one for £275,but I can get better than that.
I`m hardly going to pay now anyway, when there`s still 9 months left of the first year. :/
To be honest,if the first year passes without problems,I can see me taking my chances.
I can`t remember the last time I had a telly break, including the first LCD I bought, which is over 3 years old now (JVC 17" thing).
I think the people who sell these things prey on the fact we`re all a wee bit `scared` of LCD.
Going by my own experiences any problems you may have (dead pixels/backlight buzz etc.) show themselves as soon as you power the thing up anyway, not afterwards.

I would use the electrical goods rule that it needs to be fit for it`s purpose for a reasonable amount of time ie 6 years, Up to 6 years. What is reasonable? Their is no definition in law. There is no such thing as an "electrical goods rule" It is the sales of goods act and covers all products. Would you expect a £10 dvd player to reasonably last 6 years? I would say no. A £1000 one, yes? £500? £250? £100? £50? That is the problem with the act. There is no black and white.
I think there was a case a while back where a bloke bought a washing machine and then stored it in his garage for about 4 years. When he got round to using it, it was faulty. He was claiming a new machine as it had never been used as it was "new" If I remember rightly the judge ruled that if he had been using it for 4 years then that was a reasonable time for it to last for the price that was paid and it was not the retailers fault if he had not plumbed it in. So threw the case out. (I my not be 100% on the facts but it was something like that)
