Any advice for this not too knowledgeable punter on transferring SVHS tapes to DVD? I have a Panasonic DVD VIDEO recorder E85H and the SVHS tapes were made on an SVHS domestic camcorder (I have a Panasonic SVHS video recorder). The tapes are intended for family in the USA but I am wary of doing the transfers simply because when making some good copies of a couple of off-air tv progs I found they would not play in the US because of the PAL/NTSC disparity. Anyone see any problems?
Yes - exactly the same ones as when you made your VHS tapes.
The only benefit is that a DVD (recordings made in PAL or NTSC) should play on a PC across the Atlantic.
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
I hate answering the phone at work - It disturbs my sleep.

I would get the Video onto your PC or Laptop with a capture card.
I have one similar to this. I got it from comet for about £30. I went with a PCI (internal) one rather than USB. An Internal PCI card will give a more reliable capture I`ve found.
I plug the SVHS player into the PC capture card using a Scart in/ out cable.
To capture the footage I use flycapDS.
Then use Tmpgenc plus to convert the AVI into an NTSC DVD format.
Then use Tmpgenc DVD author to make menus and output onto disc.
You`ll then have an NTSC DVD that`ll play lovely in the USA and Canada.
A complete Cost if you have none of the above is about £40.
The Tmpgenc software isn`t free but the flycapDS is.
Of course, You could have a look here....

A belated thank you guys for your response - I had been away. Cassius, your response is well detailed but given my lack of technical ability I will pass it on to some one else who has more savvy than I and who will follow it up.
Thanks.
