Can any DVD buffs help?

Neil Roebuck (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 26th November 2001, 10:33

Can anybody help me with a problem I have with my Limit JDV300A DVD player.
I have just bought a new TV and when I play any discs the screen goes light then dark intermittently. I read somewhere that this could be Macrovision coming into action. The player is straight through to the TV via a SCART, the player is set to `ANY` TV system in the options menu (to cover PAL, NTSC etc). The player is region haked for any region. I have tried all sorts of variations in the options menu to no avail. Could it be the TV? The DVD player worked excellently on my parents Sony TV, my new TV is a 25" Goodmans, not as good as the Sony, but I can`t afford a fat ass Sony TV.

If anyone has any suggestions, it would be much apprieciated. Cheers

Hi Neil

My advice would be to take the Limit back to Richer Sounds and exchange it for a better make. The Limit does have some problems ( even R/S technical boys don`t like them ! ). I had problems with an 8080se and Richer sounds exchanged that without quibble.

When connected via scart ,the Limit dvd players only output composite video not RGB.Has your TV got Svideo capabilities ( either via scart or seperate )?.If so you could always try that route to see if it still affects your tv

Thanks for the reply Jasp, I`ve had the Limit for just under a year now, and I was thinking of upgrading it soon anyway. My TV does have Svideo via a scart socket, but it puts a mad haze over the picture.

Thanks again for your advice, I`m gonna have a look at the Richer Sounds website for a better make. How can I tell if a unit has RGB out?

Cheers mate

Neil

To find out if a player has RGB before buying it ,you`d have to read the instruction book or any sales info. Most brand named DVD players do have RGB outputs.

Did you take out any extended warranty with the Limit ?. `Cos if you did there is a buy back price ( for the machine) included. So R/S may give you something for it !.

Have you tried a different scart lead ?.

Thanks again for your advice Jasp, I decided that I should take the TV back to Comet, where I told them that it was faulty, paid an extra £100 and came away with a Sony WEGA 21" flatscreen beast - should have done that in the first place. The DVD player works great now, although a Sony badboy will be replacing soon. By the way, I did get the Supercare thing from Richersounds, they gave me it free when I bought the machine (a bad omen?) so I will get 50% back from what I paid for it to put towards a new machine.

Thanks very much for your help.

Neil
