jonpenn (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 17th January 2007, 15:57

Hi, I have had my Sont DAVS-500 for sometime now and it was #599 when bought at the time it was one of the better HCS. It has now broke and under my insurance it is being replaced, what would you say is a fair replacement for this.... they are saying a Philips HTS 3115? Would you agree?

Im concerned im going from a Sony to a philips the build quality on the sony was excellent. and sounded fantastic.

Strange that the Insurance Company are dictating which model you should get as a replacement?

Personally I would not want a Philips.

Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, JVC - they all beat Philips hands down for build quality and reliability. Difficult to pick a particular model, depends on how much they are allowing you to spend.

Hi, they have given me £179.19 (where the 19p come from i dont know!) they arent saying I have to have a Philips HTS3115 but saying that that is a comparison spec etc.

For £179.19! Do you think I culd get agood HSC as good as the SONY DAVS-500? if so what would you suggest? Or if not I can dispute it.

I would be probably take it, not even take out of the box and flog it on. And have more choice for the system I want. Though you have to be carefull with insurance companies it might be a refurb they have in hence they are telling you have to have this model.

Yes, I would be very wary of that, although accepting it and selling it on (if you weren`t happy with it, of course) may be an option to consider.

I had a quick look about the web this morning, and there are 2 very nice Sony systems available inside that budget:

HTSS500 (300 W RMS) available for £179 or less
DAVDZ111 (850 W RMS) available for £165 or less - this is my preferred model

Let us know what happens.

Hi, thanks for that, I have spoken to them and they are issuing vouchers for value of 179.19. what they have done i think is said that a DAVS500 is the same spec as Philips HTS3115 and based the cost of the philips on what they have given me.

I do like the Sony DAVDZ111.... is it a good system?

Well, yeah! And you already having a Sony system would know better than most how good their sound is. :)

Somehow, I don`t think you`d be disappointed! ;)

Well, at the end of the day, it`s your choice, not mine. The Panasonic is nice, but I would go for the Sony DAVDZ111. I don`t like those tall floor-standing speakers that come with the Panasonic, and also the Sony will have superior sound with features like these:

# DCAC(Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) automatic speaker set-up -1 button/2 minutes easy speaker set-up using microphone.
# Movie/Music Mode -Automatic mode change for ideal movie and music sound
# Portable Audio Enhancer -DSP equalizing feature for superior music sound playback when connected to portable audio player
# Multi-Speaker Formation -True flexibility on speaker positioning and number of speakers used.
