Why the differing volumes on different MP3 walkman headphones....??

I have a Logik MP3 player and was tempted to buy some other headphones for it. A mate of mine had some really decent Sony ones so I tested them out on my MP3 player and noticed the maximum volume was lower than the Logik headphones that came with mine!?!

Why is this? Are you only supposed to have the same branded headphones as the player??

Volume will vary depending on the output impedance of the player and the input impedance of the headphones. Maximum pwoer is transferred when the source impedance (player) is the same as the load impedance (headphones),
Also some headphones will have a higher efficiency in terms of electrical power in vs sound power out - not all transducers are identical.

A little tip I`ve noticed when you`re buying headphones for your MP3 or CD Walkman...

Try and get ones with the built in volume control on them (I got some Sony ones for less about £10). When you plug them in, turn the headphone volume full on and turn the volume on your player down to 1 or 2 and you`ll hear the background noise/hiss. Now turn the volume on your headphones down until the hiss is very quite or disappears... then turn the volume up on the player to a comfortable level - and you have all but cut out the background noise.

(Hope his isn`t too confusing! :) )
