DVD player breakdown within 18mnths

kissmekate (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 6th January 2007, 12:11

I have a Pye 645 DVD recorder purchased from Asda only 18mnths and it has now suddenly ceased to `find the disc`.

Is this a normal consumable timescale or does anyone else think that it is ridiculous.

That said, what are my options? Presumably a new laser? What repair prices am I likely to be looking at?

Thnaks :/

Seems to be about right for some DVD-R`s. My Panasonic E85 broke down at about eighteen months, which I have now repaired myself, big thread on the AV Forums.

I also have a Philips DVD-R70 and the Pye 645 (made by Philips) both working fine, touch wood. Bearing in mind the Pye only cost £70 new I would say a repair is likely to be uneconomic, Asda are now selling a Funai for £60.

Thanks Fred, I thought as much.

We will probably cut our losses and buy a cheap `player` only and look again when our good old VCR, currently only 10yrs old, final gives up the goat.

Before giving up you should talk to Asda about the faulty recorder. It is unreasonable to expect an item like this to break down so quickly and you have up to 6 years to complain about the quality of any purchase. Your legal rights are not limited up to the 6 years and there is nothing which limits them to the one year often quoted by manufacturers. Until recently Asda did offer a no quibble 3 year warrany on all electrical goods so they may agree to help out. If you purchased the recorder with a credit card you will have additonal rights through the card issuer. Often they will refund the cost back to you and take back the money directly from the store if you can prove to them that you have taken all reasonable steps to resolve the matter satisfactorily. Just because the item was not expensive does not mean you should have to accept poor quality - I think this comment is similar to Asda`s own advertising slogan!
