As a Brit (gone Native in the US) I`m successfully converting old home
movies into NTSC VCD`s and SVCD`s playable on my US Pioneer DVD 333 ($249 USD). (I haven`t seen a comparable UK model???)
I`m now practicing with PAL. I want to send them to relatives in the UK, BUT, I need to buy them DVD players.
1. What`s a good (cheap) UK DVD player that will play VCD`s?
2. Are there ANY that will play SVCD`s?????
3. And - where is best to buy them (mail order preferably)?
4. So long as they play regular DVD`s with acceptable quality, no special features are needed.
Cheers & Tally Ho.
RE: U.S. Videomaker needs UK Advice
well you have a few choices
Wharfedale DVD-750 & 750s - both play vcd / svcd from cd-r www.tesco.co.uk £179.99
Scan / Daewoo - same as above, both play vcd / svcd, but not quite as good pic quality www.scan.co.uk / www.argos.co.uk £174.99 / £179.99
Shinco (various models) - all latest models play vcd / svcd (and megadrive games :) ) www.lik-sang.com (HK company) £various
hope thats some help to you, there are others, but in budget range they are the best imho

Another reasonable alternative would be the Manhattan 2000 which is the machine from which the Scan and the Daewoo are derived - look for a review here soon ! Can be purchased from Eurosat.

What did you want to go and do that for???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
RE: U.S. Videomaker needs UK Advice
Oh... I dunno........., money, big houses, room to breathe, climate, 1/3 lower cost of living, standard of living, awesome fishing, big garages, lotsa toys............
Seriously - thanks for the advice. The Wharfdale seems to crop up often in recommendations but I see a few postings here which worry me a bit. The Missus is traveling over in a few weeks and I`ll give her one of my home-brewed SVCD`s to test. Is the only way to get a Wharfdale from Tesco mail order or do they have them demo`d in their stores?
More of a techie question........Has anyone taken NTSC feed material avi`s and converted to PAL (25 fps) and obtained good SVCD results using TMPGEnc (v12) to make the MPEG2`s???? Were TMPGEnc`s standard PAL templates OK or were special settings needed?
Cheers
