I recently bought a Schneider DVD855 which has a coaxial output for digital audio and has DOLBY DIGITAL and DTS logogs on the front. If I plug this into a decoder will it give me 5.1 and 6.1 surround depending on the DVD being played? And what is an affordable solution to buy? Affordable should read on a shoestring!

The logos on the front relate to the digital streams that your DVD player is capable of outputting to a suitable amp.
I don`t think your particular player has onboard decoders (the best way to check is to see whether there are six audio outputs on the back of your DVD player,or two : if the latter applies, no on-board decoding), so to get the most out of your player you`ll need an amp that can handle DD and dts, and at least Dolby ProLogic 2 too, as the latter will radically improve your normal TV or VCR recordings (and CDs too...).
Give us a guestimate as to how much you want to spend, then I`m sure a few of us can come up with some suggestions.

I`m still wuite new to this but I think I have this right. I`m sure someone can correct me if I`m wrong, and maybe I`ll learn some more too.
Both Dolby Digital and DTS are 5.1. There are new versions of DTS and Dolby which are 6.1 and add an extra rear center channel, but your decoder will need to specifically support them.
As for the discs, you normally have the choice which sound format to use in the menus and I quite often find that Dolby seems to be the default and I have to change to DTS if I want it. I`ve got a Kenwood 5050D and I`m pretty pleased with it, especially as I upgraded from a 5 year old prologic system.
