I`ve had a DVD player for a year or two now but never really took to much interest in all the techy stuff but I`ve just bought a Bush AV3K player which has Dolby Digital. What I want to know is what is the difference between DD and DTS? And what will happen if I play a DVD that has DTS in a player that only has Dolby Digital? Oh yeah which is best?
Thanks
Britman.
right the duffrence is quit big Dolby digital is a very good sound type
but DTS is a WOW! the best sound type. i only have one dvd from the US with dts and you can tell the diffrence. if you play a dts dvd on a Dolby digital decoder you won`t get any sound!
i think DTS is the best it is a cleaner and louder sound on the bombs and stuff
hope this helps

RE: What is the difference?
Right I understand. So I`d have to buy a new player that supports dts and dolby digital if I wanted to watch all the movies I already have as well as any new ones with dts?

Britman,
To my knowledge, the Bush player you`re talking about can stream a dts audio track from its digital ouput.
Obviously this means you`re going to have to invest in a nice new surround amplifier. If you want to do it on the cheap then try the Yamaha vs10 surround speaker kit.
For £350ish, you get 5 speakers and a sub, a tiny and very discrete amp/processor, plus everything you need to get started. It decodes dolby and dts and sounds the absolute business with anything you throw at it. Ive been taken by its charms ever since i first heard it-believe me when i say you wont be disappointed.
Taking into account the merits of dts over dolby. It all depends on the soundmix. Sometimes it takes a very trained ear to hear the differences, others its just plain obvious!
Tthe most pronounced for me is with the dts track on The Eagles Hell Freezes Over music dvd. The clarity of the sound is simply staggering, and the overall concert feeling(apart from the shoddy sound of guitars in the rears now and again) is spot on.
Dts is often more powerful as it has a subtle decibel lift at the encoding stage. This can often be confused as more clarity, but dts does offer a crisper sound alternative to dolby- but not to the ame extent as the jump in picture quality from vhs to dvd. Dts will need a good quality system with lots of guts and clean sound- the Yamaha will do you just fine.
All the best

RE: What is the difference?
Cheers Westy.
Looking at the manual the DVD is the 2004 model and I have the Bush Pro300 5.1 home theatre system. Iknow dts doesn`t work because I tried Gladiator using the dts sound track and didn`t get a sound! I`ll just wait until I get my next upgrade which might be a while as I`ve only had this one for a month :-)
Be lucky.
