HELP: Advice needed on External Hard drives

Hi All

Let me apologise in advance if this subject has already been brought up. But I really need help with purchasing an external hard drive, because there are now so many of them and im finding it hard to see the logic in some of the pricing. For example - there will be a 300Gb hard drive and a 200Gb hard drive both with firewire and usb 2.0 ports, but the 200Gb will cost distinctivley more than the 300Gb one. i`ve looked at various brands including Sony and Maxtor, but still im under educated in this department.

I am looking for a 200Gb - 300Gb Hard Drive with Fire Wire and USB 2.0 with 16Mb Cache and 7200Rpm with Shock and Data Protection. Also im confused with Data Transfer Rates where on most hard drives USB 2.0 appears to have a faster transfer rate than Fire Wire, but i was always under the impression that Fire Wire was far more superior to USB. Can any one help PLEASE.

Regards
Cvad

Hi

You could go for a external case that has both connections and use the one that you like best.

examples at www.starmount.co.uk but you may get cheaper ?

I might be (probably am) wrong but as far as I understand it, USB2.0 is faster than firewire but it can only run at top speed for a very short time, where as firewire can run at top speed continuously.

That`s why Firewire is prefered for video editing.

All the best

Ger.
