Wharfdale or Scan SC2000?

Jason Scott (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 16th October 2000, 12:36

I`m weighing up the differences between the new Wharfdale 750s and the Scan SC2000. A friend recently bought the Scan player but has experienced `judders` on various DVD`s which was not resolvable. Both scart socket`s also weren`t functioning (on 3 different televisions). However I really liked the look of this player, its build, remote and on screen functions and I`m wondering if his experience was indicative of other users. I`m also curious to see if the new batch on 29th Oct will solve anything.

On the other hand I`ve been reading some favourable reviews of the new Wharfdale 750s which solve`s its younger brother`s problems regarding noise, loading times etc. There`s also the added benefit of being able to take it back to a local Tesco`s should something go wrong.

Has anyone had experience of both player`s? The on screen menu`s for the Scan player were highly graphical - are the Wharfdale`s at all similar or more simplistic? Has the `weak` tray of the Wharfdale been upgraded to provide the more solid feel of the Scan? Has the remote been upgraded? And finally is the Wharfdale 750s infinately changable between Region free and specific region modes?

Thanks in advance.

Jason - see the discussion below started by wozwebs. Plenty of favourable comments about the Wharfey (this week`s flavour of the day) and you get it from a reputable trader too. Avoid that idiot who keeps yakking about the Encore DV450 (that`ll be me then) and avoid all messages posted by the Iron Duke with your life - he will suck you into his evil Hitachi cult if you`re not careful. I don`t think you`ll go far wrong with the 750S

I`m also trying to decide between these two at the moment, Jason. The major (to me) benefit of the Scan would be the macrovision disable but not if the picture quality wasn`t as good.

I may end up getting an external macrovision eliminator in any case if OnDigital ever manage to implement this in OnRequest so the 750s would be favourite in that case.

It`s all a bit of a lottery it seems:(

The latest batch of sc-2000s does not disable macro as the macrovision
clampdown is begining to filter through.

Is the region selector still available?

At the moment I would choose the Wharfdale. I got both (well the Daewoo 2200) and the picture quality on the Daewoo is rubbish compared to the otherone - it is a lot slower though :( and the scan/daewoo look s nicer.
