PACIFIC AND DURABRAND PICTURE PROBLEMS !!!

TEKNIQ (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 8th February 2006, 19:14

The £30 Pacific 1000 from asda has a faulty picture.

Many small diagonal lines (like a courderoy effect) are visible when the screen is dark - this in turn creates an effect of diagonal "shadows" ghosting across the screen.

This has been tested under the following circumstances:-

Directly into the TV, via SCART
Via my 4KUS DVD Recorder, via SCART
With four different, good quality SCART connectors
With both my BUSH Widescreen and old Mitsubishi square TVs

I notice the "diagonal line" syndrome is quite common with digital equipment, but have yet to discover a firm solution to this particular problem in my DVD player.

Note: When I record from the Pacific onto my 4KUS Recorder, the lines and their symptoms are also recorded - so the problemt is not just between DVD player and TV.

I have tried removing the aerial from my TV, to no effect.

The Pacific has been made multiregion with the correct codes.

I have also bought the cheap Durabrand £18 machine from ASDA, and there is the same problem - this machine has not yet been made multi-region.

What can be the problem?

Is this just the standard to be expected from these cheap machines, lines and all?

Should I take the machines back as sub-standard, and track down a more expensive player which comes "without lines"?

Please help.

:/

Should I try connecting the Pacific to my TV and DVD Recorder with connectors other than SCART?

Am concerned by the fact that having used different TVs and DVD players, that you are still getting the same effect. I have seen RF signals screw around with DVD playback in the past, but evidently this isn`t it either. Definitely try connecting the TV and DVD player by S-video is possible.

Sorry I can`t be more help.

Just a wild shot, but did/do you also have an RF cable connected between any equipment ?
If you have it might be worth checking that the shielding/ground is continuous between both ends and that the outer part of the plugs are making good contact with the sockets.

i had a picture problem with my dvd recorder, we have sky+ and a panasonic dvd recorder, the problem was due to a tetra radio aerial close by, so i removed the rf leads even though they were double screened. now no problem at all, as both the sky+ box and the dvd recoder amplify a tv signal slightly that was the problem the tetra aerial is causing more tv problems, where i live some people have had to use a aerial amplifer to improve their tv picture and it`s the amplifer that causes the problem, i spent a few hours pluging and pluging all the leads untill i solved the problem,

Thanks for your replies.

Further research has revealed:-

The Pacific and Durabrand machines are basically the same, in different housings - therefore logical both are displaying the same ill-effects.

The machines were set to SCART/CVBS output instead of the correct SCART/RGB output - I thought this had cured the problem, but only when connected directly to the TV. When the machines are run through the 4KUS Recorder, the lines are present whichever setting.

Testing another, cheap, DVD player, there are no apparent problems with diagonal lines when run through the 4KUS.

Must conclude that the Pacific/Durabrand models do not like being connected to a DVD Recorder - at least with a normal SCART RGB?

Any further thoughts would be appreciated, before I take both of the machines back to the shop.

Just to add, no RF cables are present in any of my equipment - so they certainly aren`t the problem.
