Can anybody help a DVD newby please?
Toshiba SD200 player, Toshiba telly. Playing NTSC discs gives black and white pictures, even with machine set to play NTSC. Telly is definitely NTSC compatible (or so the handbook tells me - we do assume that they tell the truth!)
Being new to this, I am being really thick and missing something really obvious??? Connected via SCART, dunnot if that would make a difference?
Any help appreciated!
Cotter,
In one of the tv menus there should be a format option which allows you to toggle(hold on ill go look now....),right,in the colour menu(im assuming you`ve got this feature in your Tosh menu),you can select between auto, pal, secam, ntsc 4;43 and ntsc 3;58.Ive just tried an ntsc disc and setting to auto does the trick nicely.Either that or one of the ntsc settings will correct things.
That should clear up for you mate.

Unfortunately, still non further forward. Telly doesnt have options mentioned - in the colour menu only options are the standard brightness, contrast etc. Only menu that seems to relate to what you mention is the for the scart input - allowing you to choose between AV or SVideo. Have tried both - matching DVD machine to SVideo as required, no luck. Output options on machine are Video, SVideo or RGB. Have tried messing with all three, with no luck. Am beginning to think that I am being exceedingly thick, and that the answer is going to be soooooo simple.............
Cotter,
This is most puzzling indeed.Apologies as i may have confused you with the tvs menu explanation. However im pretty sure that the menu screens havent changed much over the years on Tosh tv sets,so ill tell you a simpler way. When you press the menu button there should(hopefully!)be 5 menu options at the top of the screen, the one you need is third along from the left of the bar.Yoy need to have the tv switched to the relevant av channel for this to display correctly. It should be labelled as `set up`.The option will then allow you to toggle through the options i outlined above. If you are using rgb then ensure the dvd is set to rgb and plug the scart into ext1 on the tvs rear panel. This is the only socket which will accept the rgb feed.
I do presume you are routing straight to the tv and not through a video or sky box, yes?
As far as i can see this should sort things out for you.
Hope this works-return again if it doesnt!
All the best matey

Thanks mate for your advice. Have swapped the Scart into EXT1 and changed the player to RGB, and BINGO - success! Thought that I had tried this already, but obviously not.
You are a wonder indeed - may your advice to us thick newbies never cease!!
Again - million thanks.
