JBL...... are they actually any good???

spireite (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 6th August 2001, 17:29

Friend of mine with no net access has been asking me about JBL stuff. Since I know nothing i thought I`d ask the wiz`s in here... any good?

I`m not talking about the cheap 15watt thing you find in the odd Comet store.

(still haven`t sorted my sound setup yet - waiting for cash)

JBL`s surround sound all-in-one combos are nothing to write home about, but their separate loudspeakers are real rockers (i.e they really like loud rock music).

Pick up a copy of What Hi Fi - the JBL LX2002s for approx £200 got 5 stars this month, with the verdict : "FOR : A riot with rock or dance; bold presentation with classical AGAINST : Not subtle sounding, but who really cares ? VERDICT : A return to the glory days when JBL`s speakers were the rocker`s weapon of choice" (p.22 Sept 2001 issue).

Dunno how they`d go with AV, but if they rock, they should be pretty good with action movies, I would think.

It depends on how your hearing is, and how much you want to spend.
The best loudspeakers I`ve heard in my life was a pair of JBL almost half my heigh, with just a tweeter and a woofer.
Sounds simples, but the sound still remain as a standard in my memories, 20+ years after. by the way, many of my friends are audiophiles with top audio equipment, like Macintoshes, Nakamichis, Revoxes, Thorens, etc. But the best sound still came from those big beautiful JBLs.
If you can go for the best, spend on it Otherwise, spend wise, buy a Bose.

José Azevedo
