Quality SCART LEADS.....Are they worth buying?

yabba dabba (Elite) posted this on Friday, 9th September 2005, 09:21

I have always used the really cheap variety of scart lead ranging from 1.99 to 3.99.
I was thinking now that i am about to buy a quality dvd recorder (panny dmr es20) Should i buy a high quality scart lead to compliment it?
Will it make a noticable difference?

I agree...

If you have a very cheap player then it`s probably not worth getting an expensive cable (garbage in, garbage out)

But if you have a quality player then it`s definately worth getting a quality cable.

However, there is a "cut off" point. A £100 cable maybe better than a £30 cable, but is it three times better? (probably not)

As a rough guide spend about 10%-15% of your player`s cost on a cable.
i.e. If you have a £200 player, pay £20 - £30 on a cable.

The thing with top quality SCART leads is that you have complete piece of mind. Even with relatively inexpensive equipment, you know that you are getting the best out of it. And, as you`ll notice, expensive leads are much tougher than cheapo ones. :)

you can go too far tho, i remember a mate paying £80 for a scart lead, (quite a few years ago) oxygenated this & gold plated that, & i reckon thats just bollox, it don`t matter how good the leads are, if the socket on the player has plain old iron/steel connections then it comes down to the old "weakest link in the chain syndrome" & how many players have gold scart sockets :)

£25 is about what i`d pay for a good solidly shielded lead :D & as EVH says, even on a cheapie player it`s worth having the best pic possible (my cello dvd player cost £23.99p, the scart lead it`s connected with was £24.99p lol :) ) & the picture looks just fine 8)

Yes, I personally think it is worth investing in a good quality SCART interconnect. Currently I am using a QED 4110 Silver Reference Sqart (costs around £50 but I managed to get it for £10) and a QED P2105 Performance Sqart (cost around £25).

I wouldn`t recommened using a 99p (or however much they cost) SCART with any DVD player, no matter how much it is worth. Like mentioned earlier, even if your player isn`t worth very much and the performance isn`t great, at least by using a good quality SCART interconnect you know you`re getting the best out of it.

As long as you avoid the plastic SCART plugs that come free with your chinese TV/DVD, and buy something with an all metal case connector each end you cannot go far wrong.

The plastic ones fall apart after a while of use, and are not always screened properly, which causes interference on your picture. I would spend at least £20 on a good SCART cable.

Take a look at these
Don`t be put off by the low price they are good quality scarts and on my Dads TV were an upgrade compared to a scart he paid around £25 for at Currys or Comet.
I`m not going to claim they will beat a £100 scart but at £5 give them a go and you`ll not be disappointed.
