Having spent months scoured the shops this is my shortlist of dvds £150 mark. I want to be region free CD-R, VCD, CD.
Also what is the best price for a dual layer player

Dual layer player? I take it you want a machine that plays dual layer discs-they all do!
As for your shortlist,all you mention are fine machines,but from the list you should get down to these three

Minato g1
Wharfedale m5
Samsung 511

If all you want is a no frills player offering good performance and multi region compatibility(cd-r/rw,mp3,vcdetc),then between the sammy and the minato i`d plump for the minato as you`re saving some money-its very close in performance terms,but as a first time player its tops.
However if you want some bells and whistles,then the Wharfedale is your best choice.Besides playing any disc you care to put in it,it has a specification that defies belief at the price.
Component video out(for projectors and tosh tellies only sadly)
5.1 Dolby and Dts decoders,and all sorts of other frilly bits you can find out for yourself.
That should sort you out!
