Keep hearing the word " overscan mentioned on this forum relating to TV`s. Quick question............What does overscan mean?

It means that the picture is "zoomed" slightly, usually about 5%, so that the edge of the picture is slightly outside the boundary you see on the TV, and a small amount of the picture is lost. Broadcasters usually have a small "no go" area around the picture to allow for this. Some DVD`s go right up to the edge, but some that want to make sure that all the picture gets seen make allowance by slightly reducing the picture size. I`ve got a notion that the R2 version of Blade Runner does this. Some DVD`s only do this for the credits, where names appear right to the edge. In the old days the height and width controls on the TV allowed the user to control the amount of overscan, along with horizontal and vertical hold, but these days you usually find such settings on a service menu.

Thanks for that.....well explained.
So, is there any need to worry about this on my TV...........is it something I should be looking for?
