R+ plus or R-minus ?

Raffles (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 3rd May 2005, 13:40

Can someone advise me what the difference is between R plus and R minus. I wanted to buy a Pioneer 520 but was advised not to buy a recorder which was not R+.

I want to be able to copy from my camcorder to a hard drive then make copies for family. Would they need to have the same type of DVD as me?

Clearly I am without any technical knowledge and would appreciate any advice.

Thanks :/

Suggest you have a read of " FAQ: rec.video.dvd" in the `Info` section on the left.
Goto section 4.3 which will explain the differences in the formats.

Are you talking about transferring, editing & burning on a PC or to a DVD Recorder (optionally using the former to edit & then make multiple fast copies)?

Different Forum, similar question & answer from me.

Theres little difference between the formats for the average user (technophobes handbags at the ready), its only media thats written to in a slightly different way & read back (played) the same way for both.

Recordings on the Mico R311 (using +R(W)) & backups I have made in my PC using Verbatim or Memorex (+ & -), play in just about every player I have seen, which in my house included at the last count 2 off the following PS2`s, Cyberhome 400, Mico R311 (recorder), a MP Man Portable ,a LG Home Cinema (with inbuilt DVD player) HiFi & my fathers Apex £20 machine out of Richer Sounds.

+R`s tend to be cheaper supermarket branded machines £49 (Customer returned Mico R311`s) - £99 (New Mico R311`s, Goodmans\Alba Argos) - £129 Cyberhome WHS.

-R tend to be more branded names, -RW needs to be finalised, whereas +RW don`t need for that to be done.

RAM is another format that allows use of timeshifting, but is not that common a format for passing home recordings between family & friends.

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

Please see the attached

Also to quote www.dvdrhelp.com `DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.

I have read (sorry can`t remember where) that -R / -RW manufacture of blank disc`s is more difficult as it involves 2 lasers instead of 1 for +R / +RW. In the article this was offered as the reason why +R / +RW is the first format to reach new speeds / dual layer and -R /-RW seems to always follow +.

I assume this more difficult manufacturing process for - R also explains why people had problems with cheap -R disc`s that weren`t up to scratch.

However to be fair I have also read another article to say the quality of dye used on -R has been improved and this is no longer such a problem.

Before choosing one format over another I would suggest you try to play +R / -R finalised disc`s in the DVD Players / DVD Recorders / DVD-Rom / DVD-Writers to see if they have a preference. (For example the Toshiba XS 32 won`t play +R or +RW but the Panasonic`s will)

Sorry for jumping in,

I`ve just taken the plunge and bought a recorder for my laptop.

Went to PC World as a bit desperate to get it today, it was Olivia`s school concert this morning, I took the camcorder along, quite hapily taping away while Sarah is offering everyone copy`s of the tape not realising we do not have a video anymore (incident involving a 2 year old Hannah and a jam sandwich)

Basically I wasn`t sure what type of disc to get, so asked the young lad in there, he advised to get minus as said this works on more DVD players than plus.

As I have no idea what players all the parents have I thought I`d better go along with this.

So, was he right or wrong, just about to run off the first disc!!!

All the best

Ger.

I have Panny E55 and use DVD-R and they will not play on my old Wharfedale 750s,I remeber some Comet "sales person" telling a customer to buy a Phillips DVD recorder because DVD+R plays on every thing, when I give copies away I burn them on my computer to DVD+R because they do tend to play on anything including my old Wharfedale. :)

My Brother asked me if I would transfer a tape he was going to make to DVD of is child in some school dance production they were doing at some local theatre last weekend ,asked him for the tape and he told me they were told they were not allowed to take pictures or video it or any of the children,PC gone mad I say. :(

I have the sony gx300 recorder which supports both +R and -R.

In my experience the +R discs are more compatible - I have two DVD players and a portable DVD player - the +R discs will playback in all of these whereas the -R discs won`t play in my portable DVD player.

When I have created DVDs for friends & family - the +R discs have been more successful than -R discs for them being able to play back.
