Pioneer DVR420H DVD Recorder

si.... (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 28th January 2005, 11:59

I am considering buying one of these from Richer Sounds for £300. I would like a hard drive and a resonable quality of playback from retail DVDs as it will be my main player.

I would really appreciate any comments about this model or any alternative machines anyone can recomend. (£300 is about as much as I would like to spend)
Thanks

I would recommend the Panasonic E85, but I am biased as I have one already.

I bought one when they first came out and I think it is an excellent machine. Very easy to record edit etc. Picture quality is excellent with RGB. I believe the Tosh has nore editing facilities but depends what you want it for, as there is no DV input I assume you won`t be using it to edit home movies.
Backing up to DVD off the HD is a breeze and very quick.

I don`t think the Tosh has more editing features. It has better menu options. The Pioneer also records NTSC(Tosh doesn`t)and PAL 60(Tosh and Panny don`t),and the Pioneer has a Disc Backup feature to clone discs in 15 minutes like a PC.
The Panny E85 also does not use -RW

I have just order the pioneer. Can anyone recommend a DVDR that works well with this machine (pref cheap) .

Had to buy from Dixons in the end. They are currently on sale (online) for £324 including delivery but if you can make up the order to £350 you can use the voucher code cantbarsed35350 for a £35 discount (if anyone else is looking for one and has ran out of patients with Richer Sounds)

The Richer Sounds offer was for £299 multiregion. The unit you get from Dixons will not be multiregion.
Although it has no DV input you can still have excellent quality camcorder material by getting a -RW camcorder.Film in VR mode, then either edit on the camcorder,or just stick the VR-RW straight into the 420 and you can edit on disc or copy to HDD for editing. There is a nice Sony -RW camcorder for £450
