Page 1 of Datawrite -R packaging all looks the same

I purchased Datawrite 8xYellow and Datawrite 8x Titanium(25 spindles) from SVP yesterday and they arrived promptly today.

Was surprised that the outer/spindle packaging for both was identical i.e. yellow/blue coloured paper with the words "Datawrite Classic 8x4.7 GB general purpose DVD-R.

Spoke to SVP and was told a lot of their Datawrite stock has identical packaging but the contents are different, you should be able to tell by the dye as to what they are :/ , and that if I had any problems with any of them to notify them for a replacement.

On the actual2 types of DVD discs a) Grey on one side and purple on the other - but no mention of them being titanium and b)Yellow on one side and purple on other. You can barely read the writing on the disc saying its 4.7gb general purpose 8x dvd-r.

Question: What dye are they talking about?

Not sure about the yellow discs but the dye ( recording side of the disc ) on the titanium is CMC MAG AE1 which is just an alternative to the likes of Ritek GO5 etc dyes you may have heard about and the info can only be found by reading the dye type with a program such as Nero info tool , unless of course you check sites such as SVP who list the dye type of the discs they sell.

Both type of discs you bought have a good reputation for quality and you should not have any trouble with them.

Niteowl, search the net for a program called "ADVDInfo"
It`s about 100K download :D

you may need to update or install the Aspi drivers/layer when you run it, if you do, you`ll get those from Adaptec.

Then run the proggy, check the "Pre Recorded Info in the Lead In" data and you should see the type of dye used on the discs.

According to the mailshot sent by SVP today `Titanium` is just the nickname those disks ave been given rather than a trade name. Howvere in future Datawrite are plpanning to use the word `Titanium` on the packaging as they liked the nickname so much

Thanks for info everyone - I`ll check out the sites mentioned. Its just threw me why the outer packaging was still the same and also no mention of the dvd type on the actual dvd :/ . But I guess if they work okay its not an issue, just want to make sure they`d last a few years as I`m using them to transfer VHS home movies onto them. Who knows in a few years time we`ll be transferring DVD onto little chips instead (might even be going on now).

Because I`ve too much time on my hands I just spent an hour checking out various prices for the Datawrite titaniums including postage an packing, for 50 discs a place called www.diskdepot.co.uk came out cheapest at £16.04 for normal delivery or £16.84 for next day delivery. For 100 discs SVP won at £28.22 or £29.34 for next day delivery. Some sites were just so far over I didn`t bother writing prices but of those I did (diskdepot, svp, bigpockets, burnmedia and ukdvdr) UKDVDR was most expensive on nearly all the 4 `orders` I placed (50disks next day excluded)

I used diskdepot a while back when they had a 50 p shipping offer on and they seemed ok , my order turned up quickly, was correct, and well packed so you can`t ask anymore.
I still keep going back to SVP though even if they are a little bit more expensive than others as the difference is normally only pennies and it`s worth a few extra pence for the knowledge that if they make a mistake or you get crap discs etc they will always bend over backwards to put it right.
Everytime I have emailed a query to them I have always had a reply back soon , emailed once at 8:30 PM had a reply by 8:45 PM.
If only all online retailers had the same attitude tocustomer service.
