You need a Sky box with a digital output and a compatible DD amplifier.
Otherwise, yer stuffed :D

You have to use the optical out to get the DD 5.1 and hence you also need an amplifer with optical in.

In my opinion this is well worth doing. DD 5.1 sounds much better than normal surround on my system.

John.

I was investigating this for a relative. Unfortunately, the standard Sky box does not have a digital audio out (coax or optical) - just scart. I think the new Sky+ HHD ones have. Does anyone know if Sky have a normal box with digital audio out?

You`re correct. For some reason I read the original question as referring to Sky+

The original Sky+ box definitely has digital optical out and I`m 99% sure the later Sky+ boxes have the same.

ALL Sky+ boxes have a digital output.
NOT all Digiboxes do, but there are some!

I think, if I remember correctly, the Sony one a couple of years back did, and there are one or two others. Can`t help with model numbers though :/

If you`ve got Sky+ then you`ll need to conect your digibox to your home cinema system using the optical output and an optical lead (you can pick up an optical lead for less than a tenner from Maplins/Radioshack).

Remember to go into the sound set up menu on your didibox and select Dolby Digital output from the optical ink.

Only the first three movie channels and the odd film on the Disney channel transmit in DD 5.1 but the Sky planner always carries the DD logo for anything in 5.1 surround.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Pete.
