Need a player that outputs PAL 60 and NTSC. Any recommendations?

Versus (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 10th January 2005, 01:41

Can anyone recommend a DVD player that outputs both PAL 60 and an optional NTSC signal. My Cyberhome has gone bust and local dealers dont stock it anymore. Cheers.

I`m in Dublin. Richer Sounds used to sell Cyberhome, but they shut down in Ireland due to owing the Irish government a huge VAT bill. So I was wondering if there is another brand that has similar outputs, PAL 60 & NTSC.

My older DVD player outputs PAL 50, when I play an NTSC DVD and output it to PAL for recording it wont record properly. With the Cyberhome this was not a problem as it ouputed PAL 60.

I think you may be confused.
PAL 60 is the system that allows for playback and no recording, while PAL 50 is a complete conversion to PAL.Ideal for copying NTSC dvd`s and almost exclusively available on cheapos like Cyberhome.Virtually all quality makes like Pioneer ,Panasonic etc will offer the choice of NTSC or PAL 60,but PAL 50 can be found on Dansai`s,Pacific and that type of thing.
Most of the supermarket cheapies should support it,though I would contact someone like Richer Sounds in the UK and get one mail order to be sure

Thanks for clearing that up! How then when I switch my X-box to a PAL 60 output and play an NTSC dvd I can recorded the resulting signal without a problem? (This is why I assumed that PAL 60 was the recordable version and not PAL 50)

A vcr will only record in true PAL(PAL50).If you are able to copy dvd`s from your xbox to a vcr,I would think that as it appears some mods have been done to get round copy protection, there is a mod to convert to PAL 50 aswell.A uk vcr will NOT record PAL 60.However,if you are recording to dvd, there are certain dvd recorders, like Pioneer and Philips(are there others?) that will record PAL 60 .
