What is the difference between SmartMedia Cards and Picture Cards?
Could someone please tell me the difference between these two types of card?
I had got a Kodak digital camera ages ago with one of my computers, and it came with an 8mb Kodak picture card. I would like to get a higher memory card as a backup, but what should I look for(I was looking at smartcards but I don`t know what they do :/ ?
Also would it be possible to use picture cards from other manufacturers, such as Fuji, or Olympus, as is there a De Facto standard for all picture cards or are they brand specific? Can anyone recommend a fairly cheapish place I could buy it from?
Thanks for any help given :D

RE: What is the difference between SmartMedia Cards and Picture Cards?
The card you got with your camera should have on it somewhere the type of card it is-there are several different types and they are different shapes so it`s vital you get the right one, otherwise it won`t fit the camera. You don`t have to buy one with `Kodak` on it though-lots of people make them. Always worth taking a look on the net to see what prices are like as there can be a huge price difference. I picked up one from Maplins a while ago when they had a half price deal on-Maplins aren`t usually the cheapest place for them ,but with the 50% off they were.
Another thing you could do is put the make and model number of your camera into
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?ncc=uk&lcc=&pq-path=2/3&pq-locale=en_GB
and get the specification of your camera-the card info will be on there
Failing that, drop into a local photographic specialist and they`ll match it up for you
RE: What is the difference between SmartMedia Cards and Picture Cards?
Kodak Picture Cards AFAIK were just Kodak branded COMPACT FLASH cards.
Look at the card itself;
the connector that actually makes contact with the camera is two lines of little squares.
The card is about an inch or so square, roughly the same size on each side.
it`s a few millimetres wide, mebbes even a centimetre/half centimetre thick.
You can get them ranging up to 512 meg, and I think you can now get them "high speed", dunno if that would have any effect on it though.
BTW, Smart Media is also an older card format, easily identifiable as it`s about an inch long, half an inch wide, wafer thin and has a gold chip edge like a large Credit Card "pin" chip ;)
BTW2: Smart media and Compact flash are now daft cheap too :D (my camera is SM, but your`s deffo sounds CompactFlash)
<EDIT> there are really only two options with Kodak, Compact Flash or SD/MMC, so by looking on Emily`s link, I found this page that actually shows a picture of each type :D
