what player at around the £200-£250 mark gives the best picture?

Progressive scan is not needed.

You know, I really have no idea now, as the main market on players is sub £100 now!

yep, you should expect a decent spec dvd recorder for that budget (& without trying to start another "debate" ;) i`d heartily recomend the pannasonic DMR-E55)

For that amount he gets a great player and a great recorder as well. :)
The Panasonic E55 what a great bargain.

Do recorders have as good a playing picture quality as normal players?

My biggest priority is the quality of the picture output.
