Is there a multiregion TV/DVD combi ??

Another_Derek (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 3rd December 2004, 08:37

I recently bought a Cello combi TV/DVD hoping it would be multiregion out of the box. It isn`t and I can`t find a hack for it, so it`s going back to the shop.

Does anyone know of a small (14 inch) combi TV/DVD which is multiregion? The Cello was only £90 but I`ll spend a bit more to get the multiregion capabilities if necessary (thanks to the "Bargain buckets" forum most of my DVDs are not Region 2 :) ). It`s going in a small space in the bedroom so I do need a combi unit (either that or one of the new slimline PS2`s as a "DVD player" but I`d never get away with that one!)

I looked at the Alba unit Tesco are selling but when I phoned the Alba helpline to enquire they said it was Region 2 only.

Isn`t it about time the industry grew up and recognised that we now live in a global economy and stopped all this Region nonsense? (rant off)

Thanks in advance,

Derek.

I suppose that`s a supermarket jobbie, `cause it`s not a name I`m familiar with, but on the first point, I assume you also know that they have absolutely no obligation to accept the unit back for exchange or refund unless you specifically asked for it to be multi region?
Due to that, means be careful on what you say you`re returning it for..if it`s "because it isn`t multi region" the person on the other side of the desk can just say no and leave you stuffed.

Secondly, the chances are it`s a rebranded summat else, have you checked the hacks for other combi models, because if this is a cheap DVD combi, I`d be surprised to find it couldn`t be hacked.

It was from the Co-Op and I was told (by the Manager) that it was multiregion so Ithink I`ll be OK taking it back.

I`m sure it is just a rebrand butI tried the hacks I could find (by searching on "TV/DVD" in these forums and others) and none of them worked. I know other people have bought this model (also from the Co-Op) and have found it to be multiregion out of the box so I`m sure it can be done!

Derek.

Doesn`t matter who told you, as long as they were a member of staff, then you are ok to have it returned.

When I said look at the hacks, I meant on the left hand side links "Info>Multi-region Hacks"...but might be a bit of a trawl unless you know specific brands n numbers.

Don`t suppose you have a link to a photo of it? 9/10 times the same casing is used, just a different front badge

I can go one better than a photo - there`s some footage of it in a Co-Op TV ad on:

if that helps!

Hi

Checkout the cheap Goodmans at Index £89.75 and they did do free delivery a few days ago.The hack is as follows

1/ press dvd /tv on the tv or remote

2/ press the setup button twice

3/ press the numbers 1 3 7 9

4/ have the dvd draw open

5/ on the window that appears using the up arrow / or down arrow keys [ small printed arrows] select either 0 = multi / 1= region 1 and so on.And remember to select the tv type nstc/pal/multi [ select multi ]

The set also has an on and sleep timer and calender function and clock on screen but no zoom for widescreen and no headphone socket. But 2 scarts [ 1 for dvd and 1 for tv in /out ] and a coax audio out.
The picture is good with good sound. And it will depending on the dvd remember at what point you got too on a dvd and next time start at that point [ last memory option ].
The set size is about standard 14 " tv not too much hanging out the back. And the remote is not bad to use but the machine does not like beening plugged in while the power button is on.[ it will lockup ] just press the button or press the remote standby button very close too the machine to start it up.No other bad points i know of.Almost forgot it has user/soft/normal/rich or sound only. The tuner is uhf/vhf and auto scan [ a pain to use ] better to use manual then you can do the normal bbc1 / itv1 in the correct order. The set has rgb but i have not tried that out yet.

bye

R.B
I give the machine 4 stars out of 5 [ no zoom and the startup funny hickup losses 1 star ] model number GTV34R4DVD

At least I got a full refund on the Cello go I can start again with full pockets :)

I`ll have a trawl around and see where else I can find the Goodmans.

Derek.

Supoib :)

Didn`t spot anything like that Cello in Comet today, btw, but why not...erm...try that hack on any units that *look* like the Goodmans in stores that have the remote out? ;)

PS: Goodmans I thought woulda been in Comet, but they only have a 15" flatscreen....did you try the Index "local store" option?

I`m currently investigating Argos (don`t have a handy local Index store) who have the Goodmans GTV14T3DVD (overpriced for me at £129.99 including five movies (unnamed)), the Bush 142/145 (implies you get one of the other on some random basis?), the Alba TVD3455 and the ALbA TVD3450XI (can`t see a difference between these two apart from the fact that the latter is £10 cheaper).

Now to check the list for multiregionability (is that a word? Should be!)

Thanks for all the help so far.

Regards,

Derek.
