Philips 756 or 711?

matchday (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 17th April 2001, 00:32

I want a reliable brand name DVD player and from what I have read the Philps 711 and 756 fit the bill with:

- Easy firmware upgrades via my CDR,

- multi region via my Palm III

- the liklihood of decent CD performance (I like the sound of my my Philps CD player)

- all the leads I need in the box and

- 2 James Bond DVDs that I want to watch included.

The 711 is £175 and the 756 £200.

The main difference seems to be a dolby digital decoder and headphone socket in the 756.

Before I take the plunge with the 756 can somebody confirm my suspicion that dolby digital decoded output into a cheap pro logic receiver will give me dolby digital out of the speakers. (The 756 has 5.1 outputs). If it doesn`t I might as well get the 711 and put the money saved towards a Dolby Digital Receiver

Also can anyone seen any strong reason why I was wrong to rule out
the following.

Sony DVP-S435 (no multi region)
Pioneer DV535 (more expensive package)
LG3050 (hard to find)

hi, i had the same dilema as you when i could not decide between philips 711 and pioneer 535. i chose philips 711 at the end because of upgradability and cdrw replay.

just wondering what was your decision?
