Cheap DVD-R discs and E55 are they OK?

soapwart (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 9th October 2004, 15:09

Could anyone tell me their experience with cheap DVD-R discs and the E55 recorder.
I see you can buy ,for example datawrite `Red` discs for around 25p each which is much cheaper than `branded` ones.
many thanks.

the old datawrite reds where awfull, not tried the new 8x ones with the panny yet, i`ll stick one in later & let you know how i go on, my DMR-E30 does not seem to have any problems as a rule, dunno if that aplies to the ER55, tbh tho, you`re much better off using datawrite yellow riteks, or even data-on (i use these without any probs, they work out at 17p each) phellings say`s he`s read about cheap media being problomatic with "newer" panny machines, but i can`t coment on this, as i say i rarely have problems.

i`ll let you know about the datawrite reds asap :)

ps. i take it you gave up on the samsung recorder ?

righto, just stuck a datawrite red in the panny & seems to read it ok, and have left it recording ace ventura (for no reason in particular btw) agian, it seems ok, usually if the machine dislikes a disc it`l record for about 40secs then spit it out. but it`s not done that for ages.

I have a Panny E55 and use the Datawrite Red V3`s and so far no problem at all, burned about 20 and no coasters so far.

For just over a fiver for 25 they seem t obe doing the job very nicely.

Also no problem at the moment using Datasafe single sided DVR-Ram from SVP.

It didnt like the Datawrite greys which are 8x and it failed on quite a few of them before I gave up trying them.

:D

Ogster....was it yourself who stated you only use Panasonic RAM discs?

If so...can you get better than 5x 4.7Gig Panny RAM discs without caddy`s for £15?

`cause I can get a few packs at this price if ya like....only got 3 left mind you!

tbh the only reason i only use panny branded ram discs is cos i got 2 of em with the machine, & nearly 3 years on i`m still using the same 2 discs :) like i say, bulletproof, never had to buy any more, but thanks for the offer, it is a Very good price, but i just don`t need any :(

I had lots of problems with unbranded disks from Comet (I only bought them as I couldn`t wait for post to arrive, and Richer Sounds who sold me the machine only sold disks at ~£1 each). They would fail right at the end when the disk was almost full, or when finalising the disk - which was really frustrating.

Since then I`ve always used Datasafe from SVP - currently ~£6.50 for 25. I`ve found these 100% reliable , so am not too worried that I could save a few pence per disk if I tried another brand.
