Cheap 5.1 Sound....

Mad_Man_Moon (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 5th April 2001, 15:30

Trust me .. You`ve no need to do it with one of them Scan systems.

If you want to be a REAL cheapo whilst waiting for that THX system that you`re OBVIOUSLY gonna get .. (sarcasm not working here) ...
Just buy a couple of cheap 4 speaker PC Setups ...
Piece of pith ...
Then with some creative wiring from the onboard decoder on you DVD player ... I forgot to mention that didn`t I? .. anyway .. you`ll get a quality of sound that`s not indifferent to that of the Scan System for more than likely less than £60 ...

Not bad eh?

EDIT!!!!

no ...
it`s not that dodgy either.
I took a Y cable .. reversed it ... lead the two back outputs from the sony into the BAck input on the sub-woofer/amp. .. and the same for the front speakers ..
ran ANOTHER Y cable into the tv`s input, (also a Sony) .. for the TV to produce the centre speaker sound ... (mono of course) ..
The only think the system really lacks is a proper dedicated Sub-woofer ... There`s nothing dodgy about it .. it`s as poor as the Sound quality could get with surround .. but at least it`s surround whilst I have no money ...
PLUS ... oh . I`ve forgotten the plus ..
anyway .. this setup only cost me £30 ... and is fine ... in one small room .. I`m not going to get THX`d up until a) I can afford it .. and B) I can dedicate a room to it ...

It`s not dodgy .. it`s just never going to be ULTIMATE SOUND SYSTEM 2000 ...

Cheers :-)

I dont trust it at all. Sounds very dodgy.

Wont you need an amp with at least 4 inputs then? I think you need to look into this more, it seems a bit lacking. Good idea though.

I am just about to get a Videologic Digitheatre, which should see me sorted for a long time. I cant wait.

Woopy woo!

Simple, go to PC World and purchase the Yamaha system that they have
It supports Dolby Digital & DTS via coaxial / optical cabling.
Cost ? £169 smackeroonies

I got one last week in a very fetching shade of black.
You get 5 small satellite speakers, a sexy sub, and a nice little
amp.

Hope this is of help

Is it the Tss-1 yamaha setup?

I`ve read some great reviews but can`t find it anywhere

yep, thats the baby, apparently they`re exclusive to PC World, but
don`t let that put you off !

Got mine from Merry Hill (Dudley, West Mids) but all of the branches
should now stock them.

They`re not exclusive to PC World - you can get them at Dolphin Music (amongst others, but I don`t remember who the others are...sorry).

I have no idea what Dolphin are like, but I`d hate to see PC World get any business if it`s not strictly necessary :)

Sound OK to me, then I suppose I`d have to say that wouldn`t I?
Only kiddin ya!
No, seriously, it sound very good considering the price, the sound is very clear especially in DTS mode (Gladiator) and it`s great in DD5.1.

Our living room is probably 16` X 12` and it fills it very well without the need
to smack the volume up beyond say 1/4 of the total available.

Go on, go and treat yourself, there`s no need to spend £300 plus unless
you really have to have the best of everything.

Can anyone direct me to some reviews to this system. The only review I saw said it had weak sound output and wasnt exactly highly recommended. What cables does it come with etc?

Thanks

SG peters

Is not having a remote control for the Yammy a problem ? i.e. getting of the chair to change the volume ?
