SCAN SC-2000 A users view wanted!

Martin53 (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 1st April 2001, 11:58

I`m seriously considering purchasing a SCAN SC2000 as I want a multiregion device, with CD-R/CD-RW capability and two SCART sockets. The SCAN fits the bill. The DVD Reviewer review was glowing but a recent review in DVD Buyer quotes "a dismal budget box afflicted with terrible pictures" and scored it only 5/10.

I`d really like to hear from anyone who has the SCAN DVD to learn firsthand whether they`ve been pleased with their purchase. I`d be using a Kenwood FRFV7030D receiver and a JVC AV-32WR2EK TV.

Look forward to hearing from anyone out there with a good or bad opinion.

Thanks

Martin

Well, I just bought a new one this week after reading the various reviews and being impressed by the price, ability to upgrade the firmware to support the latest titles etc. Indeed, in the box was a disc with an upgrade to firmware version 2.16

_BUT_ although the general consensus is that it plays everything, I`ve got a region 1 copy of "The Matrix" and, even after changing the region settings (automatic/manual), and upgrading the firmware, it starts to skip, making it unwatchable, after chapter 22 or so, which is when I believe it changes layers. This seems to be a very old problem and should have been sorted long ago, so I`m wondering how I`ve ended up with it.

I spent ages on the `phone on Friday trying to get through to Scan Tech Support but each time, after 5 minutes or more, someone picks up the call then immediately hangs up. I`ll try again tomorrow but I`m not immediately impressed.

So, for me, first impressions aren`t too good I`m afraid to say.

Go to this site where you find out lots of info and links to Tech support.

I own a Scan and must say after a few initial problems all is well now.

I have played many films with no probs. Also able to record films to VCR once macrovision is disabled. I have recently upgraded my firmware to v2.23 and picture is brill.

Regards.

Paul.

I`ve had a Scan for a few months and it`s ok.

depends what you`re after - if you want no hassle and something off the shelf the go to argos etc.

otherwise the scan maybe the one for you - if you want multi region etc the scan does it.

Bear had one last year I think and I believe he had loads of problems.
so I guess if you want to know some negative thoughts from someone who hasn`t been happy with a Scan then Bear is erm your man!

I`ve also seen quite a few lets not too happy positive comments about Scan technical hotline but I believe the user group mentioned about will give you more than enough support should you purchase a scan.

Toy_car is a scan owner and I think runs this user group.

I`m happy with mine but it`s not everyone cuppa tea.

Look! it`s up to you, but you asked for opions, well buy it send it back and then buy a brand name,.

There`s lot`s of owner support and they are a decent bunch ( they all deserve to be Sony owners) but ask yourself why there`s so much owner support.

My advice is if you want to watch DVDs without problems then buy a Sony.

well with the official firmware V2.33ScaVf you should not be having this problem. so it could be the way the player is set up. or it could be the disc.

Is this the only R1 disc you are having problems with?
as it may be the Video output, is it set to PAL only if this is the case then thats your problem. its frame droping from the 29fps ntsc to 25fps pal.

if you have any more questions come over to the scan group were about 350 user`s will see the question. some one will know the answer.

Bear there is so much user support for this player because the makers listen to what we want from the player and act on it. would sony do that?

we all know your view on the scan player you owned and on sony, but you have got to understand that

1 The Scan has moved on a great deal from the problems you had.
2 This player does things any sony will not, and if some one wants them from there player they are not going to buy a sony no matter how much you shout about it.

Now this guy says that he wants a multiregion player, what sony can do that for him with out a mod? None

Now as for the mixed reviews of the player, this is down to the firmware.
the most up to date firmware V2.33ScnVf is the best of the all. The sound and Video are great.

If you look in to passed post on this forum you will find a quite a number on problems with this player. This is because of a guy called NiVZ.
He made a very good FAQ sheet for the player. In this he said any one have problems with the player should post here and he would help them out. This is why there are a number of post about problems here. Look on other forums and you will find very few.

Now I think bears point of view is bias, but to be truth full my one is more than likley bias also as i have never had a single problem with my player, so join the group and ask there for the views of over 350 users.

Martin,

As a former Scan owner I would ask you to check all postings over the past couple of months on these forums. It may be a better machine now than the two I previously owned (saw the light, bought a Sony), but the fact is that no other machine has had so many people posting on these forums because they have a problem with it. Don`t listen to Toy Car and all the rest of the present Scan owners, or even those who have burnt by Scan like me - just count the number of problems on these forums which relate to the machine then make your mind up.

Just go out and buy a Sony it`s has simple as that.

"there is so much user support for this player because the makers listen to what we want from the player and act on it. would sony do that?"

TRANSLATED MEANS.......They have hundreds of complaints from owners, most of whome are now ex owners.

Unlike Sony who test there products in the research and development department, and not in the customers living room!
