What DVD recorder?

David Beckett (Reviewer) posted this on Wednesday, 4th August 2004, 11:44

I have had a Toshiba DR1 since April and have experienced a problem with discs loading and then the message `Playback Unauthorized` appears in the middle of the screen. It first happened with a Red Dwarf DVD and all the other BBC DVDs I own produced the same result. I tried the DVDs the next morning and they all loaded and played fine so decided to leave it.

I got the R1 Who Framed Roger Rabbit DVD earlier this week and had the same problem with it. I contacted Richer Sounds (where I bought the DVD from) and they said to bring it in and swap it for a new one - which I have just done. The brand new DVD wont play Who Framed..... either. It is not a problem with the disc which plays fine in another DVD player and my computer so Richer Sounds have offered to buy it back so I can buy another make/model.

Any suggestions?

I`ve heard very good things about the Panasonic E55, but don`t know whether I will be given store credit or a refund from Richer Sounds. What are Digital Point like in terms of customer service, delivery and warranty

Digital Point are very good. But Richer Sound do the Panasonic E55 for £220-00. My friend bought one from there about 5 weeks back. Unfortunatly he was charged £250-00 by the Richer Sounds here but he complained to the head office & an apology was sent along with a refund of £30-00.

Richer Sounds have probably got round that problem by advertising the Panasonic DMRE55 with a price of £??.??. Is the £220 price in a catalogue? If I went to buy this tomorrow, how much should I expect to pay?

The only thing with Currys and it is a big thing is the extended warranties. The ones at Richer Sounds are brilliant whereas the warranties from Comet/Currys/Dixons are a complete ripoff.

This same old question gets asked every week.

Why don`t you do a search of previous posts.

There is no best DVD recorder.

It`s simply a matter of if you prefer the DVD+R/RW or DVD-R formats.

Panasonic fans will always say buy Panasonic.

Philips fans will always say buy Philips.

I am a Philips DVD+RW fan by ther way, and would never buy a Panasonic product of any description, as I just hate the brand.

There are plenty of non Panasonic DVD- brands out there. What a pity brand hatred forced you into buying substandard product

It wasn`t `brand hatred` that made me buy the Toshiba - it was given a high score in What Hi-Fi and I liked the idea of the RAM disc which apparently is not available on the Panasonic.
