Page 1 of New DVD player, severe ghosting

I recently bought a new Pacific DVD player from Asda, and I`ve noticed severe ghosting while watching DVDs. It`s like some kind of geometric pattern overlayed on whatever we`re watching, or occasionally some text that looks like it could be from a TV programme. Do I just have a dodgy unit that I should take back, or could something else be causing this?

I vaguely remember reading somewhere on the net that it`s caused by an unnecessary connection in the scart cable, and that I need to rip out one of the pins to fix it. But it seems kind of odd to me that this is necessary, and besides I can`t seem to track down the article again, so I wouldn`t know where to start...

sounds like "chatter" from you`re vcr/tv usually resolved by getting a better scart lead/swapping scart sockets/cutting one of the pins in the scart lead so it only works one way, tho i`m sure someone will confirm this and know for sure :D

Try the obvious things first before you start damaging your scart cable.

Are you using the correct scart input to your TV (RGB)? Have you selected the correct AV channel to watch your DVD? Have you set up the DVD player correctly in the menus? Try using a `screened` scart lead if the answer is yes to the afforementioned. ;)

Pin 19 is the correct pin so long as you cut the right pin 19 on the lead.

If you get it wrong = No picture, easily sorted however by reversing the lead connections ie plug the DVD end into the TV & vice versa TV end into the DVD.

You can also help matters by making sure the earth pin is really tight against the sheild.

A good quality lead will improve matters, but the real problem is that the DVD player is a output only device & the SCART lead feeds TV\Video\Sky into it & this bleeds back as a tracking ghost image across the screen.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Managed to sort this out in the end without resorting to ripping bits out of my scart cable. Turns out my TV has a setting for what it`s sending out through AV2, and while there doesn`t seem to be an option to send nothing, setting it to send AV1 gets rid of the ghosting.
