Advice needed on which widescreen TV...

RWB (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 13th June 2004, 15:02

I am upgrading my 21" Sony TV to a widescreen model, but would like advice on what is the best make/model/size to go for.

Budget cannot exceed £500, ideally around £400. I think a Sony 28/32" would be my ideal WS TV...

Recommend a Goodmans W325NST Silver 32" widescreen with nicam stereo.

Price varies but most Stores/websites around £370 without stand.

I wasn`t all that impressed with Sony`s offerings. They weren`t bad, but seemed over expensive for what you get.

I think JVC are top class when it comes to price and quality. Have a look at this 28" model. I`m pretty sure it`s the same model that my brother bought not so long ago. It`s part of their "Interi Art" range (whatever that means :p ).

I would recommend the Toshiba 28Z33.

Also, the Panasonic equivalent.

Click on the following links:-

Panasonic 28" TX28PM11 £490
Hitachi 32" C32W460N £492.98
JVC 28" HV28P37SJEC £449.95
Philips 28" 28PW8608 £489
Philips 32" 32PW6517 £479.49
Samsung 28" DVD/VCR Combi UW28J10VD £459.99
Samsung 28" with integrated Freeview WS28A116DU £442.98
Sanyo 32" 32DFN2 £449.00
Toshiba 28" 100Hz 28ZH36 £414.99
Sony 28" 100Hz KV28FX68U £474.99
Sony 28" 100Hz inc Freeview KV28DX50 £490.43

My advice is to go for the biggest screen size you can afford with 100Hz scanning.
Either the Philips 32" 32PW6517, the Hitachi 32" C32W460N, Sanyo 32" 32DFN2 are my recommendations.

The Sony KV28DX50 is quality if you don`t mind the smaller screen.
The Samsung WS28A116DU deserves a look though for the price & features.

If you want something closer to your £400 budget, with outstanding picture performance & quality, it has to be the Tosh 28ZH36.
