Calling Philips DVDR80 owners

Adrian Taylor (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 27th May 2004, 11:01

Have noticed on my DVDR80 that the “DVD Tray Record Indicator” only illuminates (along with the record indicator on the Guide-plus front panel control ) when a “Manual” recording is being made. When timed recordings are being made (Guide-plus, video+ etc) only the record indicator on the Guide-plus front panel control illuminates. Philips claim this is “normal” operation and indicates the “type” of recording being made – anybody know any different?

I think this is normal, only illuminates on manual recording. By the way, on timer recording recording overwrites previous recordings, so can only program one film at a time, do you find that too?

I get the same red light. I think its useful and at least i remember to turn it off that way!

As for over recording other programmes, i have never had that happen; but then i make sure there is enough room on the disc :p

Thanks for the feedback - Regarding the overwriting, I think you need to make sure you select an "empty title" from the Disk Menu. Don`t forget however, that the empty title must be long enough for the new recording. e.g if three programmes, say 60, 30, 60 minutes were on a DVD+RW, and the second one was erased, a 40 minute recording would overwrite the third recording (assuming the same record quality is used). For DVD+R new recordings are always added to the end.

Have you noticed any degredation in terrestrial TV picture quality since conecting the R80? I have had to revert to using a booster.

No degradation but I had a booster already.

Managed to sort out overwriting problem. I go to timer recording, program one recording then come out of timer recording. Then go back into timer recording, program second recording and out again. Back in for further programmings.

If I do it all in one go without going and out for each programming it goes back to the very beginning of the DVD RW for some unknown reason. Do you find this too?

Philips told me to download the software upgrade, but I am concerned this might upset the setup for multiregion facility which was installed by the shop when I bought the machine.

Re: Overwriting problem - I set up two recording using Guide+ : Selected programme 1, Record, Selected programme 2, Record, Exit Guide+ : and both programmes recorded OK.

Adrian

Still does not work if I dont exit out of timer programming after each program!

Mentioned it to Philips and they suggest I download their software upgrade from their site, however I am concerned this may upset the multiregion facility I had done when I purchased the machine...

Did you upgrade your machine with the software from Philips?

GC

I have not upgraded the firmware in my machine, but as I only purchased it a few weeks ago it may have the latest firmware already. My machine was also modified by the supplier to be multiregion, and I would also have reservations about installing the Philips upgrade.

Do you know if there is a way of viewing the version of the installed firmware? If so, we could verify whether your machine has a different (earlier?) version.

The firmware upgrade should not afect the multi-region hack used on the recorder.

Hi Adrian

I have found that it overwrites only with a new blank DVD RW ie. one that has not been in the machine before and hence not formatted by the machine!

It works fine with a DVD that has already been used in the machine...

Do you find this too, it would be interesting to know.

Thanks
Patrick
