Consider the Scan SC2000 carefully. It is now a good player. Firmware is upgradeable. I did find customer services slow to respond (or even answer the phone), but my player has been swapped, and the new one is great. Plays anything I throw at it. Good picture and sound quality.

The Scan is a fine budget player, but is not for everyone. If you are looking just to play DVD`s you may be better going for one of the LG players. But also be aware that all the budget players have problems with playback of some discs, some more so than others. One of the best things about the player is the user can update the firmware them selves and scan do address any issues raised with firmware. Some of the older players had problems with there build quality but this has been resolved now. And despite a post made by some one that has a grudge against scan stating I was on my forth player, this is a lie. I have only had 1 scan player that I am very pleased with.

Hmmmm!

I brought the Ariston 2000 2 weeks ago. I picked it up for £160 and it`s a fairly good machine. You can make it multi regional by entering a hack (it`s at the multi region hack section of this web site) and you can also disable the macrovision too! Picture quality was very good for a machine at this price! The sound was reasonable, but CD`s didn`t sound very good through it. It`s a great starter machine and very easy to use, even though the instruction manual looks to have been made in a rush!

I changed the Ariston for a Bush 2004 just yesterday. It`s £180. It has a very cheep feel about it. It`s very light and the remote is nasty! It`s multi regional and can also disable macrovision without the need of entering a hack. The picture quality is average and slightly dark in places. The sound is top quality though as it has a built in DD decoder. I`ll have to play around with it some more though to see if I`m going to keep it.

They`re both good players and at the moment I wouldn`t know which one I`d recommend over the other.
