Hardware Forum
I`ve recently bought a SCAN SC 2000. It`s not strictly my first DVD player as I have one in my PC although the PC is a little to underpowered to fully appreciate DVDs (especially on a 14" monitor).
I`ve had the player about a week now and it`s been absolutely perfect. All the hacks worked fine first time....I owe a lot to the FAQ!! It arrived with 207 firmware on it and looked very odd through my video (only way I can watch it as my telly is crap..BIG but old and has no scart etc) so I just bunged 223 on a disk and it worked perfectly first time. I have a steadily growing DVD collection...(all R2) Jaws, Abyss, American History X, ID4, Snatch and just today, X-men (but I`m at work so I can`t watch it yet.).
People go on about THIS problem and THAT problem and how crap their scan player was when they had it...ad nauseam. I haven`t had a single problem with my player...no artifacts, no pixelisations, no errors no hanging, no crashing. Some of you may say I`m one of the lucky ones...but I like to think of myself as one of the majority. It`s a great player, at a price I could afford and REALLY cannot see why so many people slag it off. I`ve even had it hooked up to my dad`s huge screen TV and put my nose right up to the screen.....no glitches..no nothing...worked great!
I guess I`m going on a bit here...I suppose you`re wondering what the point of this mini rant is?
It`s this... quit bitching about what it does/doesn`t do. If the it fits the product description (which, as far as I can tell, mine DOES..perfectly) then what`s the problem? Don`t go messing around and then wonder why it`s broken or doesn`t do something that a player 3 times the price can do!!! There will be / are better players around but, saying that, there`s nothing actually WRONG with the scan.....it`s just not as good as you THOUGHT it was....tough..your problem. I`m delighted with mine and fed up reading about all you other guys who have a dumbfounded problem with the player. I`m glad your happy with your player..I don`t go around say "this is wrong with it" "that is wrong with it" do? No player is perfect so don`t say "there`s nothing wrong with my player"...dig deep enough and anything`s possible..so please...quite ya whining about scan!
WOW! Thats quite a speech.
I too am a happy Scan owner, and I usually get the latest firmware updates from Nelley to see what the manufacturers have improved. Here`s my explanation of why we make small criticisms of the player.
Just now you will find that the Scan v2.23 has a problem with SVCD`s - they won`t play and are simply ejected. MP3`s skip the first couple of seconds on some files as well.
The only solution is to downgrade to V2.11 (which isn`t VCR friendly) or v2.08s (which is, but has the blue shadows). Also, neither of these fix the MP3 which is only corrected above v2.25.
At the moment all we want is VCR friendly, SVCD capable, no MP3 skipping, and no blue shadows. Unfortunately this isn`t available just now in a single firmware. I`ve tested v2.06, v2.08, v2.08s, v2.11, v2.14, v2.23, v2.25, v2.28 and the latest v2.29 and all have some combination of problems.
Nelley at Scan is aware of these problems and is at present hassling the manufacturers for this functionality, as well as long MP3 filenames.

Good post
I too have not had any probs with the quality of my Scan. However through reading the many posts on the Scan I now know a lot more about this player which I would not have picked up with out people posting.
I do believe that we should try and help anyone who is experience any difficulties regardles of brand and dont waste our time bitching.

Agreed, but aren`t these just minor annoyances? Changing the firmware took me all of 10 secs to do. Why not just burn a few CDs with the firmware you want and leave them by the side of the player? If you`re sitting down to watch an entire movie or listen to some music for a while, then surely 10 secs isn`t a huge amount of your time?
BUT!! You`re right in what your thinking now and what you`re about to reply..It should NOT happen!! It SHOULD be perfect!! True...in a perfect world. But you can also see that work is being done constantly to improve the situtation. How many DVD players do you know that can fixed just by bunging a CD in the drive for 10 secs? Not all that many..most times it`s a case of returning the entire player. There`s a firmware to suit everyone out there and most people know this situation before they buy the player. I like the idea that if there`s something wrong with the player, I can spend a few weeks farting about with firmware disks, depending on what I want to do, and be reasonabley sure, the next firmware will fix my player without the hassle or expense of my returning it.
Erm..damn I`m in random rant mode today!!!
I HAVE REMOVED THIS POST AS IT MAY BE MISSUNDERSTUD

You had it a week!! LOL..LOL....LOL..
PS..dont throw the box away you will need it!
hehe..now why doesn`t that reply surprise me?
RE: What`s the problem?
Changing firmware willy nilly as you describe by having a bunch of firmware discs by the side of the player - sounds dodgy to me. You don`t want to have to have the worry that if you get it slightly wrong that you might knacker your player.
Besides, upgrading the firmware changes all the settings back to default. You don`t want to have spend extra time after the 10-30 secs upgrade re-entering your own TV, audio settings etc.
I also await the firmware patch that fixes all the niggles in one. I`m sure the Koreans will get there eventually, in the meantime I`m happy to wait. NiVZ does a great job of testing these releases from Scan before we all get our dangerous hands on them.
Surely this forum IS for people to ask questions about problems they`re having, or to get information on new things they need to buy.

Yup, it is..which is why my little rant about people just randomly slagging off the player...ask questions and discuss by all means...it`s what the forum`s here for but what my coments were mainly about were the people who just say "that`s crap, this is better..GOD!!! YOU`RE SOOO DUMB FOR BUYING THAT PLAYER!!!" which, I see, has already snuck into this thread...congratulations to bear for that one!
