RE: Compacks 101 Dvd Recorder
I just got one of these
seems to work OK on general TV recording
two little problems I have found - is this normal for DVD recorders ?? (my first attempt)
1. DVD`s will not play properly on my PC - only plays first VOB file (15 mins at normal speed) and explorer only shows 1 VOB file even when DVD is full - DVD pl;ays OK on Compacks recorder and another DVD player
2. Will not record from a "commercial" VHS tape - just refuses says it is `protected`
Are these problems normal for all DVD players
I wanted to record all my old home VHS tapes AND THEN be able to edit them on my PC - can`t do it

OK - thanks for that
Now what about problem 1. i.e. my PC will not correctly read or play the DVD produced (have tried WinDVD and PowereDVD v4)
and Windows Explorer cannot see all the VOB files
I want to be able to edit the recorded files ??

Some further info on this recorder:
To disable macrovision:
press setup
press 1 1 1
press search
There are quite a few codes of the form n n n search, after entering setup, where n n n is some 3 digit sequence.
111 = disable macrovision input check
00x = enable region x
321 = display firmware version number
123 = set full scan (tv channel frequency range)
987 = clear eprom
999 = set default
Beware of the last two as a channel rescan (at least) will be required.
Recording Modes (hh:mm:ss for empty DVD+RW)
(as reported by windvdrecorder and Ulead whilst playing back samples of each mode)
Code:
HQ = 720x576 at 8.7 Mbps = 1:05:31 interlaced mpeg2 (frame B)
SP = 352x576 at 4.3 Mbps = 2:08:54 interlaced mpeg2 (frame B)
LP = 352x576 at 2.7 Mbps = 3:18:56 interlaced mpeg2 (frame B)
EP = 352x576 at 2.0 Mbps = 4:20:48 interlaced mpeg2 (frame B)
SLP= 352x288 at 1.3 Mbps = 6:18:32 mpeg2
I have the same problem with the vobs: only the first vob appears in windows explorer. However, the entire DVD is playable in some configurations. Win2k and windvd works. Win98se + powerdvd does not - it only plays the visible vob.
The default volume label given to these DVD+RW disks is ESS_DVR_ISO.
Here is a directory listing of a disk with 90 minutes of SP video (at least 3GB) on it:
Code:
Volume in drive X is ESS_DVR_ISO
Directory of X:\
<DIR> VIDEO_RM
<DIR> VIDEO_TS
0 File(s) 0 bytes
Directory of X:\VIDEO_RM
VIDEO_RM.BUP 32,768
VIDEO_RM.IFO 32,768
2 File(s) 65,536 bytes
Directory of X:\VIDEO_TS
VIDEO_TS.BUP 12,288
VIDEO_TS.IFO 12,288
VIDEO_TS.VOB 161,792
VTS_01_0.BUP 61,440
VTS_01_0.IFO 61,440
VTS_01_1.VOB 1,073,739,776
6 File(s) 1,074,049,024 bytes
Total Files Listed:
8 File(s) 1,074,114,560 bytes
2 Dir(s) 0 bytes free
Easy cd creator version 5 (under win2k, DVD_ROM drive) sees a 4.38 GB track on these DVD+RW disks, even if empty, after they have been in the recorder. It appears possible to read the track to an ISO file on the hard disk, but as it exceeds the 4gig limit of fat32, was unable to do this. (don`t want to use ntfs)
Easy cd/dvd creator version 6 (under 98se, DVD_ROM drive) Disk Information gives:
Disk Type: Bad media. Error reading disk information
My guess is that they would read ok in a DVD+RW compatible rewriter. Anyone know?

Hi,
I`m thinking of either getting this DVD+RW or the Mico DVDR311. Does anyone know how you make them record in "video" compatibilty mode so the discs can be played back on some DVD players that are a bit "fussy"?
Also, are the resolutions set for HQ, SP modes etc or are they manufacturer specific i.e. the above posting says the DRW101 captures at a lower resolution in SP mode, is this the same for the Mico?
Thanks,
Damian
RE: Compacks 101 Dvd Recorder
Hi Sammy
I just connected the Video outputs of my VHS player to the AV1 or AV2 inputs on the Compacks 101
I used a standard video lead (three phonos yellow, red, white)
You could also connect the Scart output to the AV1 or AV2 inputs - you would need a Scart to phono lead
