I am going to the US soon, and want to purchase a cheap portable DVD. Can anybody recommend any that are region-free or hackable?

Dont forget to try and get a dual voltage one, have a look at few american sites, bestbuy, amazon, post on dvdr-help.com and have look in the players section.

You could try getting the Cyberhome 712 which may take the Cyberhome 710 hack.

Snag is it seems to be 110V only so the savings of a rough cost price £186 might be lost in getting a UK PSU.

You may be better off buying the UK Cyberhome @ £249 badged as MP Man in Currys or Cyberhome 710 @ £269 in WHS.

Where you could score in buying the unit so you can watch it on the out going flight, you would be able to buy a spare 4\4.5 hour battery pack for it at a rough cost of £66 (I would pay for a extra one for myself)

I was under the impression that being portable, that it would probably run off of 9 or 12 volts therefore the plug that it comes with would convert 110 (or 240) volts to the necessary lower voltage required. Is that right or is my knowledge of electricity a bit amateur?

Its more a case of the US being very insular in its POV, they run at 110V & dont feel they need to cover other countries line voltage in their products.

Most portable equipment sold in Europe covers 100 - 240V (UK voltage actually dropped on paper to 220V some years back ) & will work in US as a result.

The Cyberhome 712 from reading the spec only works on 110V but comes with a 4 hour battery & its something you may have to check instore. Again dont know if the MR hack works.

The Initial 1731, I cant see any voltage details on, but as far as I know no-ones cracked it for MR.

The Cyberhome 700B model is very similar in design and specifications to the 707B - the main difference is a minor battery design change. The Battery life remains at a 2.5 hours for both models. Volts: AC 100~230V, 50/60Hz. This may well be closest thing to the UK Cyberhome 710 still cant say if the hack will work.

Heres a link to Walmart & its range of portables

Cheapest player is about £100 depending on what you want & what you require it to do.

I think Maplin or CPC recently had a US - UK power adapter going cheap allowing you to step up the voltage.

Let me know what you decide please I was serious about wanting the uprated battery from the US, even if you dont buy the CH.

Theres that insular thing again - Personally it wouldnt bother me too much because I use my portable in my flat (no TV or HiFi), on train & sometime soon (wife & cash permitting) plane journeys.

As I said earlier, it depends on what you want, what you require & how often you really plan on using it. I have enough DVD players in the house anyway.

On the subject of power adapters US -> UK CPC £7.38 ex VAT
