SCAN SC2000 VCR FRIENDLY THEORY

NiVZ (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 15th February 2001, 13:31

I wanted some feedback from other Scan owners about my current theory on VCR Friendly mode.

I think that when you receive your machine VCR Friendly mode is DISABLED.

To enable it you must upgrade (or downgrade) to a VCR Friendly version (v1.80, v2.04s, v2.08 and v2.14). At this point you must enter the VCR Friendly code (see the FAQ). VCR Friendly mode is now ENABLED.

If you then upgrade to a non-VCR Friendly version (ie v2.08 to v2.11) then VCR Friendly mode is disabled again (since v2.11 is always disabled).

However if you then upgrade to a new VCR Friendly firmware (ie v2.11 to v2.14) then VCR Friendly mode is re-enabled automatically. (since it was disabled earlier at v2.08)

To sum up I think you have to either install v1.80 or use the VCR Friendly code to set the enabled `switch` which is then always enabled for firmware versions that support VCR Friendly mode.

Just a theory - anyone else got some ideas?

NiVZ.

Theory needs revised! I just downgraded to v1.80 and entered the VCR Friendly code. Re-upgraded to 2.14 and VCR Friendly was disabled.

Back to the drawing board. Might have something to do with the 00000001 and 00000003 numbers in SSW menu.

I have just ugraded from 2.06 vcr UN friendly to 2.14 and tried making version 2.14 vcr friendly but still the 00000003 coding appears. I used the method from Nivz`s FAQ`s (excellent info), but I probably missed something (including sleep, brain, the usual). Any ideas please

Dave

The scan will still read 00000003 after the 2.14 upgrade.
Test it by taping a dvd.

If this fails apply the handset hack and try again. Some people have reported they have had to downgrade to 1.80 and back up to 2.14 and then upgrade again.

You don`t have to downgrade to make your scan player VCR friendly..

If the firmware you install doesnt support macrovision disablment, then your knackered. Firmware 214 on Nivz site supports the remote macrovision removal hack.Firmware 214 on Herbis Dubois site doesnt...

I have found downgrading just solves some pixellation issues on my machine... Although I installed 1.80 twice..

Anybody got version 1.64 firmware.. Nivz / xeno.. can you get it off Nellish ? send it to me pleaszzzee.. divad.www[at]ku.oc.evreseerf.kilwagf

I will try mate.

Why would you want to run v1.64 out of curiosity?

Hello Xeno...

If you can install the firmware which originally came with your machine........i.e. November 2000...

Your starting off with the original firmware which was supplied with your machine. (Erases any other verison which you installed on top)

i.e. If your machine has screwed up, you can rty to restore it to its original state..... Even though I install Version 1.80 twice to get it to register ..WRITING/DONE.... Maybe the instructions should be re-written by TAE YOUNG TELSTAR ?

Makes you wonder how many people who purchase a Scan dvd player download the new Firmware and install it.. Nellish of scan is obviously using people as beta testers... This is fine with me... Upgrades generally improve things....

People who have tried upgrading and have killed their machine...
I have upgraded from versions 1.64 ( which came supplied with machine) to 1.80, 192, 193, 204, 204s 208, 214..... Scan machine is still living....and with good quality picture... My Routine is to downgrade twice to version 1.80 before installing new version.. This doesnt mean you should follow my example though... If you find other methods work for you then stick with it...

Mmm...

My player arrived with v1.64.
I tried the remote codes to make it VCR friendly - this appeared not to work (not suprisingly).
I then upgraded to v2.14 (huge thanks to NIVZ for info) - entered the remote codes and I now have a nice VCR friendly player.

From other bulletins, everyone suggests you need to start on v1.80 then upgrade. Have I just been jammy, or is the v1.80 baseline just a safe lauch pad for all changes.

Thanks to you all for info.

Mont
