ainsworth (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 9th February 2001, 09:00

My DVD player has not got a Dolby Digital Decoder in it, is there any way I can have 5.1 sound without an internal decoder, perhaps a seperate digital decoder?eg I have seen 5.1 systems with amps, will the amp decoder the signal for me and transmit 5.1 to the speakers??

hope you know what i mean

The short answer is "yes" - the longer answer....

Assuming your DVD player has a digital audio output (I`d be surprised if it didn`t) then all you need is a Dolby Digital decoding amplifer, which takes the compressed Dolby Digital signal, uncompresses and then `splits` it to seperate 5.1 outputs. Amplifiers you could consider looking at include the Denon AVR1601 and Yamaha DSP-A5, there ARE others available of course.

Reviews suggest this is more suited to PCs than home cinema. It`s not on their website yet, unfortunately, but wheel yourself down to WHS and have a looksee at `Home Entertainment` - it`s reviewed in the Power Up section
