db meter - for home cinema set up

Anyone know of a supplier of an adequate cheap db meter for home cinema set up, or is it a waste of time and your best to rely on your ears?

You can borrow mine for a week if you want, mate.
The sort of thing you don`t need all the time (unless like me you`re getting fed up of planes fying overhead and you want evidence of the noise levels :/ ) Good to use "just to be sure" if nothing else, and if you`re building a sub, say.

Alternatively you can get them for £25 from Cornwall Electronics - they`re inthe Audio/Video ¦ SPL Meters . Go for an analogue one.

Why do you say the analogue one as opposed to the digital one

First of all, cheaper! Second, you want an average reading, not one changing every 0.5 of a second - the analogue one does the job fine. This seems to be the consensus from what I`ve read, anyway. Useful info here

THX recomend analogue spl meters.

I am still using the one from Cornwall Electronics that RichardH recomended an age ago. The only differance is that it has been calibrated by THX at Skywalker Ranch 8)

All the best,

The 42%er.
