just got a new av receiver from richer sounds. i did have an eltax for about a week but it had quite an annoying humming noise. i thought it may just be a warming up sound or because it was new so i gave it a go, but after a week it was still there, so i replaced it with a Yamaha HTR5630.
i have just connected it up and couldnt get any sound out of it. i double checked the cable wire and thats fine, the coaxial connection from the dvd to the receiver is fine, it worked with the eltax. the yamaha itself seems to be working as the display works and i can navigate around it.
any ideas, im a bit stuck.
cheers.
Is there a speaker on/off button. On my Sherwood there were two little buttons marked a/b for turning different sets of speakers on and off on the front.

Have you setup your amp to use coax and not optical as the digital input.
cirdan............whats the score? Are you booting out the Watts yet? Tell me are you happy with the Yamaha and what speakers you using?
Pete
sorry for not posting again, went away for a few days.
everything is setup for coaxial, i used it on the eltax i had and that worked ok. the yamaha seemed to be doing what it should but no sound, i double checked all the speaker cables etc. one thing though. the manual does state optical is needed for connecting the dvd player and coaxial/digital for cd players. does this mean i need to get another lead to connect the dvd to amp? the reason i kept hold of the coaxial is because it worked with the eltax as i said and i didnt know i would need another.
i have also tried all the buttons on the front relating to a-b speakers but nothing.
cheers.
RE: no sound from new amp
the dvd might be on the cd setting and u might have to change it to dvd.
does a dvd player have a cd setting? i will try adjusting the settings on the dvd player and see if that works. i will post back tomorrow.
cheers.
RE: no sound from new amp
no thats not what i mean .the cable might be getting sent to the cd part on the amp u might have to read the manual about config the setting .
coax--cd
optical---dvd
if the manual says that dvd is optical there must be a way to change it to coax cable.
if nothing happens try www.avforums.com on their amp page and ask the same question as i`m sure i`ve read the same problem before.
p.s if u have any luck give me a review of the amp and how it sounds as i fancy one myself but not any reviews, plus tell me if all the features work i.e martix 6.1,silient cinema, etc.
hope it all goes well.
sorted it out. i tried the cd button on the control and low and behold i got sound!
the reason i didnt press that before was because i kept thinking dvd on the control and not cd, but as has been said the audio maybe coming in through the cd option.
i assume this is fine, it doesnt matter that it doesnt do anything when i have it selected to dvd, i know it works now but i just want to be sure.
gave it a bit of a test with clones and fellowship, and after about an hour or so i have to say im impressed. i have started to go through the many options and they all sound very good, have to try and see which work best with each particular film. have to say though that the dts track for hero seems particulary good.
will post back in a day or two once i have had time to try it out properly.
I have the Yamaha HTR5540RDS and the coaxial input is defaulted to the CD option while the optical input is to the DVD. It is easy to reassign these but it is confusing when you first use the amp!
